Favourite Nintendo Wii games of 2008 Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Animal Crossing and more...

Mario Kart WiiNintendo started the year as a phenomenon, and finished in a clear lead, outselling rival Xbox 360, and scoring more than double the sales of Sony's Playstation 3, which was released the same week in 2006 as the Wii.

It would be a fair assessment to say Nintendo has ridden a wave of casual games to the point of abandoning their dedicated fan base.

The first half of the year saw the release of its most anticipated titles, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, sequels to historically fun games.

But shortly thereafter, Nintendo packaged a bathroom scale with a game called Wii Fit for $90.

This became 2008's biggest breakout hit, far outselling Grand Theft Auto IV and other traditional gamers' games. Like Wii Sports, Wii Fit asks you to make simple movements to play various minigames, but also tracks your weight while you do it.

I wish I could tell you what happened in the World Of Wii in the second half of the year, but the only major releases were Animal Crossing: City Folk, a virtually unchanged update of a game on DS and Gamecube in previous years, and Wii Music, a title designed for those who find the gameplay of Guitar Hero to be too much realism, and instead relies on gestures to mimic various musical instruments. When I was a kid, they called this "air guitar," though now they've also added air sousaphone and air glockenspiel.

Mario Kart Wii, the game I'd most heartily recommend.

Top Five games for Nintendo Wii this Christmas

The Wii remains one of the hottest Christmas gifts long after its release. The lower price and the interactive nature make it a wonderful toy for the whole family to enjoy.

The console does skew more towards kids and younger families, but honestly, there's enough variety and pure good gameplay to make a Nintendo Wii a great choice for anyone of any age who love games.

1. Wii Fit

Careful who you give this too, you don't want to intimate they need to lose weight. This is a blast though, using the Wii balance board and software to keep track of your weight loss goals and to streamline certain exercises. It's nothing you couldn't do on your own, pushups, lunges, yoga, but it does offer input, instruction and motivation. Wonderfully practical, and somewhat engaging "game" that will be a great introduction to fitness for those who often find it boring to work out. Some mini-games to keep the interactive levels high.

animal crossing wii

2. Animal Crossing: City Folk

Sort of a Sim City for kids, Animal Crossing: City Folk has you build the game. You can do it yourself, with friends or family in your house or even with other friends online. You move into a house, furnish and build it as you like, help to build the town, interact with everyone and everything, and even use the game's microphone to chat to friends over the internet. This game lets kids be in charge of everything and does it extremely well.

Animal Crossing: Let's Go To The City (Wii)

wii music

3. Wii Music

This isn't like the other music games out there, but it is a wonderfully creative way for kids to unearth the beauty of music. You use the Nintendo Wii controllers by shaking them around in time to either complete tasks in mini games or just to jam with friends. You play everything from the Theme to Zelda to Carmen, loads of classical choices in between. And the instruments? Well, yes, there's guitar and drums, but there's also tubas, banjos, flutes, recorders and even cat and dog suits. Very heavy on the cuteness, very heavy on musical exploration, very big on fun.

Wii Music (Wii)

ultimate band

4. Ultimate Band

This is like the other music games out there, without all the clunky peripherals and price. Ultimate band plays rhythm-based hit songs from big artists, but just using the Wii controllers to play the songs. Sure it's not as deep or realistic as Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but is essentially the same concept and still offers a fun musical experience in a social setting.

Ultimate Band (Wii)

5. Disney's Time Out

Like last year's Smarty Pants, this is a trivia/Quiz game, but, as the title suggests, with a Disney flavour. From the Mouse family to newer faves like Lilo and Stitch and the Lion King (with Aladdin as your host), trivia questions and mini games make this a fabulous way for kids to get into the competitive spirit.More than 5,000 questions are included on all things Disney.

World's best selling video game is Madden 08 football sim

If you asked most games what they think the best selling game in the World over the last three months was bet the answer would be Madden 08. More likely Grand Theft Auto or FIFA 09 but no EA's football sim out sold them all selling almost 3 million copies beating Wii Fit into second place ( maybe if you could get Wii Fit it would have won!).

Wii Fit sold just over 2 million copies while Madden sold well in the US only 36,000 copies were sold outside the homeland.

What was third? Star Wars The Force Unleashed sold 1.7 million copies to grad that place with Pokemon Platinum (with 1.5 million) in fourth fifth was Mario Kart with 1.48 million sales).

Guitar Hero World Tour shortage pushes up price...

guitar hero world tour box
Retailers are using the limited supply of the game and band kit to charge up to $300 when the list price is $189.

It's supply and demand they say, in the run up to Christmas, the busies time for video games sales.

In previous years Nintendo's Wii console has commanded premium prices as they were in short supply (some retailers think this will be the case again this year).

Wii fit has been in short supply since it launch and sells for more than the list price today - guaranteed to be rare this Christmas.

So if you're looking for any of the above this Christmas get shopping now as prices are sure to rise in the lead up to December 25th.

Economy down while video games sales are up...

Despite the economy slumping, sales of video games increased in October, according to NPD Group.
Sales of both the games themselves and consoles rose last month, with the popular Nintendo Wii console selling some 803,000 units. In September only 687,000 Nintendo Wiis were sold.
That’s good news for game makers looking to Christmas to save their sales figures.

Microsoft sold 371,000 Xbox 360 consoles in October, an increase from 347,000 sold in September.

Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 190,000 units during October.

Exercise video game "Wii Fit" was the No. 2 most popular game sold in October. Electronic Arts, now want to cash in on the idea of video game exercise, said this week it will start selling its own suite of fitness programs in March.
The company may be copying the popular "Wii Fit" idea, hoping to cash in on some of its sales and sell more products to women (EA’s sports games are overwhelmingly played by men). EA may also be gambling that as the economy tanks, people may ditch their pricey gym memberships and opt for in-home fitness regimens (see earlier posts on Gamezplay.org).
EA didn’t fare as well in the sales report as some of its rivals — sales of its “Rock Band” game disappointed some industry watchers. Its shares were down $1.53 at $20.69, near a 52-week low of $20.65 in afternoon trading Friday.

EA - Electronic arts want to help you get fit with this Nintendo Wii game

Following in the footsteps of Nintendo's popular "Wii Fit," the video game publisher known for the "Madden" football games is jumping into fitness software targeted mostly at women.

Electronic Arts Inc. was set to announce Thursday a new line, EA Sports Active, that runs on the Nintendo Wii console and aims to complement, not compete with, Nintendo's "Wii Fit" exercise title.

Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, called the Active brand, whose first title, "Kickstart Fitness," launches next March, a "somewhat radical departure from the normal game experiences we provide customers."
EA's sports audience has been mostly young men, who have flocked to football, soccer, basketball and hockey titles to make the company the world's dominant player in sports video games.
But to stay competitive with rivals such as Activision Blizzard Inc., whose success with games like "World of Warcraft" and "Rock Band" seems to be weathering the recession, EA needs to continue to expand its audience.

The company's new brand seeks to take advantage of the popularity of the Nintendo console and of exercise games. While the "Wii Fit" is already enormously popular, Moore, a former physical-education teacher, said EA's sports software will run people through an exercise routine with a more Western approach than the Japanese company's product.
"Wii Fit" includes activities like running, skiing as well as yoga, and it emphasizes balance as well as fitness. EA's products will include exercises like running and lunges, as well as simulations of sports such as tennis.
The games use straps to attach the Wii's controller and "nunchuk" attachment to a player's body, so the fitness routines can be performed without holding the controls. EA also plans to include peripherals such as resistance bands. Titles in the line will cost about $60, the same as a regular video game.

Wii Fit shortage expected to last until Christmas - where to buy a Wii Fit...

Shops around Britain are running out of Wii Fit boards as health-conscious Britons have rushed out to buy the latest must-have exercise accessory.

The popular Nintendo video game attachment combines playing computer games with mild exercise. Priced around £70, it guides users through 40 exercise games including yoga, football skills and slalom skiing.

Nintendo says the games can 'change how you exercise, how you balance, and even how you move.'

Waiting lists have been reported to be growing by up to 1,000 people each day. Major online stores including Dixons, HMV and John Lewis are all out of stock.

Even Britain's largest supermarket chain Tesco is out of the product. Its website informs customers: 'Due to high demand for this product, additional stock is not currently expected from supplier until August.'

Now retailers fear their will be few of the consoles left for the Christmas rush.

More than half of Japanese Gamers quit Wii Fit

Rather than a game, Wii Fit is more comparable to an exercise program. More specifically, it’s something that most people would consider playing in short bursts each day. A recent poll, however, shows that close to two-thirds of Japanese gamers are already giving up on the product. ITMedia in Japan took poll data from 1000 gamers and a. . .

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Nintendo Wii best selling game ever - Smashes Nintendo Wii Sales Records

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Smashes Nintendo Sales Records

Wii Game Sells at a Rate of more than 120 per minute

After just one week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America's history. Since its launch on March 9, the feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a nearly limitless variety of options for players. Dozens of classic Nintendo characters like Mario and Pikachu are joined by industry icons like Sonic The Hedgehog and Metal Gear's Solid Snake for all-out four-player battles. The endless customization keeps players coming back for more. The previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros. Melee, became the best-selling Nintendo GameCube game of all time with more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, so it's no surprise to see this latest installment racking up record numbers.

"It's important to remember," Dunaway said, "that we have lots more fun on the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will keep our momentum going strong."

Mario Kart Wii launches April 27 with the Wii Wheel, which lets players drive their speedy karts with the intuitive feel of a wireless steering wheel. It's another "bridge" game like Wii Sports that lets video game novices and veterans play and have fun together. Wii Fit arrives May 19 with the Wii Balance Board to combine fun and fitness. It lets users track their progress over time, and it's an easy way for every member of the family to keep active and play together.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit www.Wii.com.

Nintendo Trying to Keep Americans Fat - Wii Fit Shortage hits US
