Favourite Microsoft Xbox 360 games of 2008 Halo 3, Bionic Commando, Street Fighter, Burnout Paradise and more...

Halo 3Image via WikipediaAfter the success of Halo 3 in 2007, Microsoft started 2008 on a very rocky basis as its Xbox Live Service experienced frequent outages.

However it didn't take long for the service to bounce back and then help deliver some of the best games of the year.

Yes, this is the year I truly think digital delivery came into its own. Braid, Castle Crashers, and Geometry Wars2 headlined Xbox Live Arcade and offered some of the best new gameplay experiences available, and high definition remakes of games such as Bionic Commando and Street Fighter II made playing classics feel brand new.

Braid on its face seems like a simple Super Mario style side-scrolling action game, but your ability to roll back or speed up time made the simple timed jump mechanics one of the most complex and fun experiences in gaming.

The glorious painted graphical style and atmospheric music make the $15 price tag seem unfairly inexpensive for its creators.

Of course this is Xbox, and its power is not in the artsy or indie, but in testosterone and raw destruction. The biggest contenders for this prize are Burnout Paradise and Gears of War 2.

Burnout Paradise is an open world racing game, where you're dropped into a fictional city and can start a competition at any traffic light. Ramps and shortcuts litter the streets, inviting daring jumps and stunts, and you're rewarded new cars by running your opponents aggressively off the road. Tap the left and right bumper buttons simultaneously and your car will go into a controlled roll and a counter will keep a running tally of how much damage in dollars you can cause. One of my better runs racked up a 110-car pile-up, including 8 city buses, that totaled several million dollars in damage. The almost pornographic level of destruction is offset by there being no human drivers or consequences for such actions, making it like playing with Matchbox cars that explode.

Gears of War 2 continues the adventures of Delta Squad from the 2006 original. You'll traverse city streets, tunnels, and mountains fighting an invading alien menace with maximum machismo. The story is paper thin, but the gameplay is right there and accented with over the top voice acting and literally dozens of ways to take down and enemy, including a chainsaw mounted to the end of your rifle. Not for the faint, but what it lacks in subtlety it makes up for in replay value.

Favourite Nintendo Wii games of 2008 Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Animal Crossing and more...

Nintendo started the year as a phenomenon, and finished in a clear lead, outselling rival Xbox 360, and scoring more than double the sales of Sony's Playstation 3, which was released the same week in 2006 as the Wii.

It would be a fair assessment to say Nintendo has ridden a wave of casual games to the point of abandoning their dedicated fan base.

The first half of the year saw the release of its most anticipated titles, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, sequels to historically fun games.

But shortly thereafter, Nintendo packaged a bathroom scale with a game called Wii Fit for $90.

This became 2008's biggest breakout hit, far outselling Grand Theft Auto IV and other traditional gamers' games. Like Wii Sports, Wii Fit asks you to make simple movements to play various minigames, but also tracks your weight while you do it.

I wish I could tell you what happened in the World Of Wii in the second half of the year, but the only major releases were Animal Crossing: City Folk, a virtually unchanged update of a game on DS and Gamecube in previous years, and Wii Music, a title designed for those who find the gameplay of Guitar Hero to be too much realism, and instead relies on gestures to mimic various musical instruments. When I was a kid, they called this "air guitar," though now they've also added air sousaphone and air glockenspiel.

Mario Kart Wii, the game I'd most heartily recommend.

Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! - Adventure game of the year

Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!
Mousechief, Co. announces receipt of 'Adventure Game of the Year' and other awards by GameTunnel, for 'Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!'

Look beyond the corpse strewn, testosterone fields of core games. Look sharp for a disturbance within the candy-toon amusement park of casual games. Cigarette smoke signals from a plucky band of indies dare the bold to try this literary satire of post-suffrage, feminist struggles in rural America.
The latest reviewer to succumb to it's call is one of the longest running and largest websites devoted indie games. Not only has GameTunnel has named it 'Adventure Game of the Year', they named it 'Most Innovative Game' and placed it at No 4 for all indie games in 2008!

DHSGiT has been racking up kudos for a while.

Jay is Games:
"...highly, highly recommend this game. ...you won't have played anything like it. It is extraordinarily entertaining and long enough to contain a really meaty story."
Gamezebo:
"The game does a superb job of immersing you in the Roaring '20s, and the biggest treat of all is the irreverent dialogue. This isn't one of those games that you can just click through on your way to the next puzzle. Each sentence is dripping with wit and healthy doses of innuendo."
GamerTell:
"(DHSGiT) is simply an amazing game. It is a delightful, empowering, entertaining and captivating adventure that you can play for 15 minutes or for hours. The two areas where this casual game from Mousechief really shines are the vibrant characters and the witty script, but the whole game is really just phenomenal."
And on 24 Dec, '08 GameTunnel summed it up:
"It's a morphing, mini-game filled, retro mystery high school romantic melodrama board game. Seriously. All of those things. It's crafted an entire world that is easy to sink right into. The game is sassy and smart and totally deserving of our top Quest honors."
In 2007, Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble won the Casual Games Association's $3k prize for 'Most Innovative Game'.

DHSGiT is not a story for children and has been rated TEEN using the T.I.G.R.S. rating system.

Angels Online - Guild System Introduction

angels online
The guild system in Angels Online (http://ao.igg.com/main.php) is closely linked with in-game PVP battles. Only players in a guild are qualified to occupy a totem. Powerful guilds have more chances to grab the best territory, so guild improvement should always be a top priority for successful PVP. Today, the Angels Online team from IGG (http://www.igg.com) is happy to briefly introduce their guild system for all players.

There are four ranks for guilds in Angels Online. The higher the rank of the guild, the more guild members it can hold. The guild system plays a very important role in Totem Battles, which is basically a competition among guilds. Players can donate certain materials to enhance their guild’s reputation. When their guilds rank is enhanced, the guild can then recruit more guild members. What’s more, the Guild Coffer will be available to all guild members to assist with guild members needs. Only with more guild members and reasonable cooperation among different classes can a guild win the Totem Battle.

Players whose guild possesses a territory can claim an Angel’s Gift Box from the appointed NPC every day. Meanwhile, they can enhance their totem so that they have an even better chance to win battles. Players can enhance their guild’s reputation while they are building defense towers for their totem.

Pay attention! Production players become very important in the process of increasing the guild’s reputation because they can collect the materials which are necessary to level the guild up. The guild’s reputation can be enhanced quickly if there are many players who possess high-level collection skills in the guild. Apart from production players, fighting players and magic players are the main forces in the PVP battles because of their high damage output.

When players’ Angel Credit reaches level 3, players can go find the appointed NPC in the main cities and create a guild by paying a certain amount of in-game money.

The available Outpost Battlefield in Angels Online has proved how important guilds can be in game.
