Lord of the Rings games leave EA - variety say

the-lord-of-the-rings conquestElectronic Arts won't be publishing any more Lord of the Rings games, according to a Variety report.

The licensing deal expired at the end of last year and hasn't been renewed. Which means LOTR rights pass back to Warner Bros., and by extension, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

"Based on logic and what some sources have told me, expect Warner Bros. to start producing Lord of the Rings games itself soon," wrote the Variety reporter. That could mean tie-ins for the Hobbit movies due on 2011 and 2012, for example.

EA still owns the Harry Potter game licence, and will make the tie-in for the final film - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - which is set to release in 2011.

Sony pull 300 Killzone 2 ads after complaints their war themes that look "like Iraq"

Sony pull 300 Killzone 2 ads
The first complaint about the campaign, placed on bus shelters around Toronto, Canada, was from Grade 4/5 teacher Davis Mirza, who emailed Sony Canada.

"My kids, who come from a lot of different countries, who have to experience violence, who basically come here to seek shelter and safety, that's the stuff they don't need to see," said Mirza, noting the game's iconic "menacing head with glowing eyes".

He also said the images of war-torn Helghan look "like Iraq".

"I don't think that when you're in Scarborough, where we're having to deal on a constant basis with violence, that does anything to help promote any kind of community renewal or even responsibility," he added.

Mushroom Men - The Spore Wars video game on Nintendo Wii

Mushroom Men - The Spore Wars
An ichorous green meteor plummets through Earth's atmosphere, fracturing and showering the earth with glowing green space dust that affects all forms of life nearby. Some plant life - like mushrooms and cacti -acquire sentience. At the same time, the green glow twists and mutates other life forms like spiders and roaches, transforming them into semi-intelligent, warlike communities.

WII BOSS BATTLES

When I came onto revising the boss fights in Mushroom Men, we had some basic mechanics in place but they needed a lot of iteration to make them truly interesting. We didn’t exactly have a lot of time, so I looked back on some of the fun boss moments I’d experienced in the past. I’m a huge retro-game fanatic, with a big collection of old systems, so I spent an afternoon or two with some of my favorite old games to find out what made those bosses fun.

Bosses as Mechanic Reinforcement
Several of the bosses and mini-bosses were included to reinforce a specific mechanic, such as the Telekinesis-Throw (whereby Pax uses his Telekinesis ability on an object and tosses it back at the enemy). Players had the option to use this ability during the game to get the upper hand on an opponent, or could let Player 2 perform this to help them out in the midst of battle. But it was never enforced, as we didn’t want to force the player to use them. However, with bosses we had a chance to make a puzzle and to encourage the player to use those mechanics. Several of the bosses require this Telekinesis-Throw attack to dispatch. One of the mini-bosses actually acts as a tutorial for the Spore Punisher maneuver, flying out the player’s reach until they can successfully execute it.

Boss as Action/Puzzle
Some of the bosses had to be stand-alone encounters, and that allowed us to borrow a trope from the Zelda series: the boss as an action/puzzle exercise. In some of these encounters, the player wasn’t strong enough to hurt the boss directly, or couldn’t get at them, and had to use environment components and specific game mechanics to take them out. This framed the whole boss fights as puzzles to be solved, not simply a skill exercise (although there is some of that, surely!).

Bosses as the Level
In the Parking Lot, the player will face not one but FIVE bosses to deal with. The entire area is centered on these encounters, and I’m willing to wager it will be one of the most well-received experiences of the game. I won’t spoil it, but each of the bosses will use their environment in interesting and unique ways closely tied to them.

Extreme Skate Adventure PlayStation 2 cheats

Extreme Skate Adventure PlayStation 2 cheatsDisney's Extreme Skate Adventure is a videogame developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision Publishing. The game was created for the PlayStation 2 console from Sony, the original Xbox and the GameCube. It was released in September 2003.

The title is classed as a sports simulation focusing on skateboarding and it's unique because it uses a whole lot of characters taken directly from the Disney animated world. The game is played in 3D using a third person perspective. The engine is that of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 game.
Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure is not in any way a title in the vein of the skate franchise from Electronic Arts or of the Tony Hawk games launched by Activision. Disney wished to make a game that would appeal to the children demographics by combining two elements set to attract them: the Disney universe and skateboarding. You can play as the characters from Toy Story, Lion King and Tarzan, and there are lots of different levels included in each of the worlds. There's also an option for players to create their own universes from scratch.
Each of the characters in the game has a unique look but also a board, moves and collectibles. There are two main game modes: a story-driven one, and the combination of Practice Mode and Freeskate that allows all players to try and pull off the most ridiculous tricks.

Double USB hard drive for Nintendo Wii?

nintendo wii console price increaseRumours are afoot that Nintendo is working on a "double USB hard drive" storage solution for the Wii.

The game storage device is said to mount on the back of the Wii and look like a “natural extension” of the console. Allegedly, a firmware update will be required to use it and once it’s on Wii Shop Chanel, content can be put on it. The rumour also suggests sizes of 32GB and 64GB will be available.

We’re not entirely sure what "double USB hard drive" means, but we’d hate to lose both USB spots on the Wii, not to mention that hard drives add an expense to the Wii, which some might think is already expensive enough.

Resident Evil 5 - London Treasure Hunt goes horribly wrong...

Resident Evil 5 - London Treasure Hunt
"Realistic" replica body parts go missing

It seems publicity stunt organisers who hid a number of gory replica body parts around Central London this morning as part of a Resident Evil 5-themed treasure hunt, have lost their heads. Literally.

From the three heads, three torsos and 12 arms and legs hidden at various locations around Trafalgar Square, only two heads, one torso and six legs were returned by players - yet the fake body parts disappeared from all the locations they were hidden.

The organisers are now apparently concerned that these may be mistaken for real body parts and spark alarm.

A spokesman for the company behind the treasure hunt said: "The body parts are very realistic and we don't want people to be alarmed by them.

"They've all been taken from their original positions, but we now have no idea where they are. If you have them, please either return them, or dispose of them in a responsible and careful manner.

The spokesman added: "In addition, chicken livers were used for added gore, and, uncooked, they can be dangerous". You know, just in case you were thinking about making them into a tasty snack.

The competition was launched to mark the release of the highly-anticipated game on Friday, but didn't go without a hitch.

Apparently seeing people walking around at rush hour clutching decapitated heads and covered in blood was enough to offend some people, and the police were called to the competition finish line on Westminster Bridge, prompting an early finish to the competition.

Still, Steve Long, a 26-year-old IT consultant from London was named the winner for collecting the most body parts, and received a holiday for two to Africa, where Resident Evil 5 is set.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix won't be the last of the 2D fighter revamps

Super Street Fighter II
Speaking to Videogamer.com, Capcom VP of business development Christian Svensson said, "Are we done doing HD Remixes? No we're not done. But the next ones that we do will be even better, based on what we learned."

He said that some Capcom games don't need a high-def re-release, but asked if the celebrated Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was one that "needed" a remix, he said, "I won't say it doesn't need it. Marvel would be great to do. There's obviously a fan base for it. It's probably our most requested title. Unfortunately, I wish I had news to share on that front but I don't."

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, released last year via Xbox 360 and PS3 download, sold 250K units across both the consoles as of mid-December, less than a month after launch. The release of the game preceded the launch of the full-blown console launch of Street Fighter IV this year.
