Activision today announced that Guitar Hero fans will have another virtual destination to join together and rock with the launch of the franchise’s very own space in the PlayStation Home
The 3D social gaming community that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences together online for the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system.
“Backstage with Guitar Hero” will give Guitar Hero rock stars around the world exclusive VIP access to both a themed backstage lounge and massive concert venue where they can meet up, hang out, check out videos for upcoming titles on the franchise, and share their rock and roll secrets. “Backstage with Guitar Hero” will continue to evolve over time adding new functionality.
Once honoured by Metallica with seven Motörhead covers performed as “The Lemmys,” GRAMMY® Award-winning legend and lead vocalist and bassist of Motörhead, Lemmy, will take his rightful place on stage alongside Lars, James, Kirk and Robert in Activision Publishing Inc.’s Guitar Hero® Metallica this spring.
Budding rockstars will have the opportunity to experience Lemmy’s in-game likeness as he wails away on vocals and shreds his bass guitar – or play as the icon himself. The rock ‘n’ roll legend, born Ian Kilmister, will have a familiar tune with him as Motörhead’s 2008 re-record of ‘Ace of Spades’ rocks its way into the set list.
Lemmy says, "It's great to be in Guitar Hero with all these famous people and I'm really pleased to be in it with Metallica...but James is still taller than me."
“Ride the Lightning” with musical icons Metallica and 21 other rockin’ acts in an all new Guitar Hero experience – Guitar Hero Metallica. Enter the world of Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo and experience the intensity and skill of one of the greatest bands of all time. Shred on the guitar controller, rip on the drum kit controller and wail on the mic to a set list featuring over 45 explosive hits from Metallica’s illustrious career and a wide variety of other legendary artists personally selected by the band, such as Alice In Chains, Bob Seger, Foo Fighters, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Queen. Fans will be able to rock as Metallica while performing in venues reminiscent of the band’s epic album covers, themes from their music and real world locales.
Roughly one year ago, Activision proudly announced that the Guitar Hero franchise had surpassed $1 billion in North American revenues (a feat accomplished in just 26 months). Now Guitar Hero has reached another important milestone, as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has become the first ever game to generate $1 billion in sales.
The news came from Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during his keynote address at CES. Griffith also noted how the video game industry has had a profound effect on other entertainment sectors, and that Guitar Hero in particular has been hugely important to the music industry. For example, in its first week, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold over three times as many units as Aerosmith's last studio album. Furthermore, he cited Nielsen SoundScan data, which showed that artists whose music was playable in Guitar Hero had seen download sales increase 15-843%.
"Music has a history of evolving through technology and we are at the beginning of the latest chapter in that story," he said, as quoted by the BBC.
As for the newest Guitar Hero, Griffith said he's quite pleased with World Tour's user-generated aspect. 25,000 songs were created in the first 10 days and 141,000 songs have been posted so far. The Guitar Hero community site now has more than 600,000 members. To date, there have been 21 million user-song downloads.
Looking at the video game business overall, Griffith sees gaming dominating. "Movies, recorded music and TV - these are all stagnating or contracting entertainment sectors. Video games are poised to eclipse all other forms of entertainment in the decade ahead."
