Major players from the computer games industry are heading to Staffordshire University for the UK’s biggest student games conference next week.
The Ukie Student Conference 2018 takes place at Staffordshire University’s Stoke-on-Trent campus on Wednesday 24 October and is designed to bring academia and industry together to inspire and educate future talent in the games sector.
Tickets are offered free to students across the UK and the event features keynote speakers from leading games companies including Jagex, Playground Games, EPIC and Coatsink.
Staffordshire University is a growing hub for computer games, offering a range of degrees including Computer Games Design, Computer Games Programming and Games Studies with facilities on campus featuring a hi-tech Vicon Motion Capture Studio and a specialist Games Centre.
It has also launched the UK’s first esports degree together with a state-of-the-heart ‘Esports Hub’ where students can host and broadcast live esports events.
Dave Edwards, Senior Lecturer in Games and Visual Effects, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome the Ukie Student Conference back to Staffordshire University for its fifth visit. The conference is a fantastic opportunity for students to attend exclusive talks and workshops from some of the brightest stars in the games industry.
“Developers and industry gurus from all areas of the sector will be delivering talks about different career paths in the industry, setting up a company following graduation, and what it will take to build a successful career in games. The best part is, it’s totally free, and right here in the heart of the country.”
In addition to keynote talks, the day will also feature CV workshops, an exclusive exhibitor area and networking opportunities. This year, a sister conference also is being hosted in Scotland by Abertay University the following week.
Leon Cliff, Ukie Membership Relations Officer, added: “Ukie Student Conferences are incredibly important to the Ukie Student Membership programme as they help us to bridge the gap between academia and industry. They provide the perfect platform for students to gain an understanding into what working in the video game industry entails and what skills they need.”
