On March 21st the 3rd ID was making good time into enemy territory using Highway 1. Tallil airbase (in name only, as the airbase had not been used to fly aircraft since Desert Storm) became the objective for the 3rd, as Tallil was not only near the intersection of Highway 1 and 8 (two important supply routes) but was also home to the Iraqi 11th Infantry Division's headquarters.
