Top seven Nintendo DS titles sell over 10 million...

nintendogs ds video game
Announcing that the DS handheld has now sold over 100 million units worldwide, Nintendo also reveal that some seven games have now passed the 10 million sales milestone.
List...

  1. Nintendogs
  2. New Super Mario Bros
  3. Brain Age
  4. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
  5. Mario Kart DS
  6. Brain Age 2
  7. Animal Crossing: Wild World
These are the games that have now topped this hefty tally.

Apparently, a whopping 83 games have now also passed one million in sales, a testament to the phenomenon the DS has undoubtedly become.

A new model of the system - the DSi - is now available in Japan, and it will be heading to Europe and North America soon.

Nintendo DS sales have topped a whopping 100m units worldwide, the videogames giant has claimed.

The figure’s a combination of sales for all the DS variants: the original DS, released back in November 2004, the DS Lite, which appeared in 2006, and the DSi - which was only launched into Japan in November last year and won’t arrive in the UK until next month.

"Consumers have shown their love for Nintendo DS - 100m times over," gushed Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

By comparison, Sony said last month that - as of late January - it had shifted 50m PlayStation Portables worldwide. The first PSP launched in Japan during December 2004, a month after the DS.

But DS sales still have some way to go before they overtake those of another classic Nintendo handheld - the Game Boy. It’s sold just under 120m units worldwide, but has had a significant head start on the DS, of course - Nintendo released the original Game Boy back in 1989.

New Professor Layton game coming to Nintendo DS - Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute

Professor Layton and the Devil's FluteLayton and the Devil's Flute hitting Japan this fall.

New game - with video hereProfessor Layton and the Unwound Future

In a state of despair over how Japan's enjoyed three Professor Layton DS games and so far we still only have the first one available in English? Prepare to continue to despair, ladies and gentlemen - in addition to a live-action film (Professor Layton and the Eternal Songstress) scheduled for an early-2010 theatrical release in Japan, Level-5 is preparing a brand-new trilogy of Layton games for the Nintendo DS - starting with Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute, which they announced this week in Famitsu magazine.

A new iteration of DS hit Professor Layton could be on the way; earmarked for release alongside new film, Professor Layton and the Eternal Songstress, which will be released in Japan next year according to Famitsu.

"The series wrapped up its trilogy with Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, so there was a bit of resistance to making yet another new title," Level-5 head Akihiro Hino told Famitsu. "However, we received word from a lot of gamers during development asking if this was really the end, and that was all the inspiration we needed to create a new trilogy, a 'second season' of Layton."

Devil's Flute is a new start both for the series and for the good professor himself. The game is set three years before Professor Layton and the Curious Village, before our top-hatted hero met his erstwhile sidekick Luke. The Professor has dropped by a mysterious fog-enshrouded town that's home to a legend of a great giant who menaces the countryside whenever a certain flute is played. The young Luke plays a key role in this legend, it turns out, and so does Remi Altava - a female colleague of Layton's and a new heroine you'll be meeting for the first time in this game.

As Hino explained to Famitsu, Devil's Flute is part of a brand-new trilogy of DS games - and developing the series as a trilogy from the get-go will result in a truly novel experience. "With this trilogy, we've got puzzles and tricks that go across all three games," he said. "I think each individual game is going to take a lot more time to complete than before. We're challenging ourselves here because we don't want people to think it's the same thing over again."

Devil's Flute is set to come out this fall for the DS in Japan, just in time for the Eternal Songstress film. And it's a good thing, too - the game and the movie are actually connected plotwise, with Eternal Songstress positioned as the continuation of the story in Devil's Flute.
