Sony say - PS3 is most powerful console
Sony has declared that PlayStation 3 the most powerful next-generation console available - despite what it's rivals might claim.
Sony president said, "I have heard many people say our competitors' systems are just as powerful as the PS3. That simply is not true."
"No other next generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3."
However, producing such advanced technology has caused difficulties - with manufacturing problems leading to stock shortages and launch delays.
"I don't think anyone could have foreseen the difficulties we encountered in the production of the blue laser diode for the PlayStation 3".
"We were asking our teams to develop millions of components for the PlayStation 3, like the Blu-ray disc player and cell broadband engine, that had previously only been produced in the thousands."
I have heard people say that a high-capacity game delivery vehicle like Blu-ray isn't necessary in a next generation computer entertainment system. You just can't expect that 9GB of storage capacity found on today's DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow's games.
Hirai went on to observe that some of the first wave of PS3 games, such as Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man, take up 16GB of space - which "simply wouldn't be possible on any other system without using multiple discs".

HMV unhappy at wii allocation
HMV said the Nintendo Wii was one of its hottest Christmas products, but the lack of stock available has left the chain frustrated.
HMV were chosen as the UK launch partner for the Wii, and its flagship Oxford Street store hosted a midnight event attended by Nintendo UK boss along with several celebrities.
Pre-ordered stock quickly sold out - and HMV could have shifted many more units had there been enough.

Centre of Excellence plans to support future UK
Trade body TIGA has welcomed recent statements made by MP Shaun Woodward, on the need for a dedicated 'games academy' to benefit the UK industry.
The idea of a games academy, or Centre of Excellence, was first put to the MP last July, and is part of the three-pronged initiative by TIGA to address skills shortages in the videogame sector - along with encouraging the development of new IP, and a scheme to assist research, debate and innovation in industry technology.
TIGA has been in discussions with independent and developer-owned studios across the country in order to understand industry requirements, as well as researching initiatives in other European countries to see what can be learned, and to look at possible collaborations.
"The industry is crying out for more suitably skilled people to enter the sector. Skills needed to cope with the next-gen transition to larger studios and changing patterns of production are needed now."
"There are potential gains to be made by looking at how techniques and know-how from other closely related industries can inform the way we develop product. These are the issues we are exploring with companies and partners," he said.
"Most training is done in-house or on the job, which is a large investment for companies and partly explains why there is general anxiety at the poaching and tempting of staff away from studios."
TIGA's long-term goal is to to develop strategies for the continued success and competitiveness of the UK games industry in an ever-changing global market.

Sony are 'talentless' say Microsoft
Microsoft launched an unprecedented attack on Sony's PlayStation 3 business at CES in Las Vegas yesterday.
Two senior executives branded the Japanese firm's online service for the newly-launched console a "disaster" and said the company lacks the talent and the "DNA" to ever deliver a suitable online console service for consumers.
"It's going to take Sony a couple of years to get up to speed on this, and I'm NOT sure that they necessarily have the talent, or it's built into who they are as a company".
"They're struggling with some of their hardware issues, and apparently they're going to deliver another five million in the next 90 days. But this business is about hardware, software and services now. And the consumer expects that."
"It's taken a company like Microsoft four solid years to get where we are today - the richness of the experience, the consistency of the experience, constantly updating features and making it feel fresh - and we're a software company and this is a software plane".
"If I wanted to make my online service better, and I wanted to give Sony a little piece of advice, it would be to copy Xbox Live a little more closely".
"My honest opinion is that it's pretty much a disaster. They keep saying that they have a free service. Well, if they don't have anything, of course it's free. And you know what: what's free about £300?"
Bill Gates announced on Sunday that Xbox Live will be brought to Windows Vista this summer, and an announcement from Sony on Monday that 1 million PS3s have now shipped in the US.
