LittleBigPlanet video game tops 1 million user - created levels

Sony and Media Molecule, creators of LittleBigPlanet, have announced that the game now boasts more 1,000,000 user-created levels in its database. That’s an average of one level being created ever 21 seconds since LittleBigPlanet first launched back in October / November last year.

The staggering 1m levels have been played over 244 million times.

This figure is good for Sony in more than just sales revenue terms too. The game is single-handedly carving out a really unique niche for the PS3. Microsoft has done a sort of half hearted make-your-own-games thing with the recent launch of Kodu Game Lab, but basically user-generated game content has become Sony’s baby in this generation.

That’s not to say it has been too easy getting there, though. The game was famously delayed after Qur'an references were found in the background music. LittleBigPlanet’s giant level database has been criticised for being too difficult to find particular levels in and it has faced numerous problems with copyrights, because players naturally want to try recreating other games using the LittleBigPlanet level creator. Players have also complained in the past that their creations have been unceremoniously moderated (aka deleted) for reasons unknown, although Media Molecule has since rejigged its rules on level moderation to help players out rather than annoy them.

But it’s working, clearly, and Sony is going to continue capitalising on LittleBigPlanet’s success in future – the game is due to get a PSP outing, which will only serve to widen the appeal of making custom levels once you play them on the train or at work.

Furthermore, the concept of ‘Play, Create, Share’, under which LittleBigPlanet was born (or vice versa), is also being rolled out to other games, including ModNation Racers, a racing game announced back at E3. Essentially it’s a kart racing game much akin to Mario Kart, but you get to design all the cars, tracks and racers yourself.

The Media Molecule CEO has also hinted that more LittleBigPlanet news would be coming on August 18th.

Flight simulator Traffic X new website launched

The dedicated website for Traffic X, the latest version of the world’s best selling AI aircraft traffic expansion for Flight Simulator, is cleared for takeoff!

The DVD-ROM version of Traffic X is now available and to accompany the full release of download, boxed and upgrade versions, the dedicated Traffic X website www.justflight.com/trafficX-home.asp has now gone live.
The site is designed to support the huge community of Traffic X fans. Visitors to the site will find a huge amount of information about Just Flight’s best-selling AI traffic expansion and a steadily growing catalogue of user-generated content to enhance the program. Anyone who wishes to can create their own airport facility files or aircraft repaints and upload them to the Traffic X site to share with the rest of the Traffic X community.
Commenting on the new site, Just Flight’s Richard Slater said: “We’ve had a dedicated site for each release in our Traffic series since the days of FS Traffic 2002. The beauty of the Traffic series is that its huge army of fans take a lot of time and effort to put together traffic files for their own airports or repaint the aircraft. If they want to share their files with the rest of the community they can upload them to a site specifically aimed at other users. We have similar sites for our Cargo Pilot, Airliner Pilot and Flying Club titles and they have all proved to be extremely popular.”
Traffic X includes over 1,700 different aircraft variants based on more than 80 aircraft models. The planes are designed to the highest level of AI aircraft detail and painted in a dazzling variety of airline liveries from around the world. They can all be seen flying, landing, taxiing, parking and taking off at airports large and small.
The aircraft featured range from small single-engine private aircraft like the C152 right up to the world’s biggest airliner, the Airbus A380. The software also includes the highly advanced 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 XWB and a huge amount of other aviation traffic that falls between these extremes. There is a massive selection of commercial jet airliners, regional jets, regional turboprops, business aircraft, general aviation aircraft and helicopters and, for the first time in the Just Flight Traffic series, a whole host of multi-national military aircraft!

As well as aircraft, Traffic X also boasts a huge set of new features – here’s a quick summary of some of them:

  • The new Traffic ControlCentre (TCC) program gives you full access to customise and expand your AI traffic in a comprehensive and easy-to-use way.
  • ChronoTraffic AI time period selection feature. Every aircraft and flight can now be set to be specific to a certain period of years.
  • Take the place of an aircraft spotter and watch the traffic at busy airports.
  • The all-new Follow-me car and pushback truck let you explore the airport from the ground and even guide incoming AI aircraft to their parking positions.
  • Traffic X now includes a diverse selection of military aircraft.
  • The 787 Dreamliner now has all the known launch customer liveries included!
  • The Airbus A350 XWB comes with all the known launch customers liveries included!
  • Keep an eye out for clandestine CIA Extraordinary Rendition flights.
  • An all-new Traffic Radar allows you to view traffic information for each AI aircraft in range. There are three different modes - vertical speed and current altitude, bearing and distance, identification and true airspeed.
  • Another Just Flight Traffic first - Unique Custom AI sounds.
  • Appropriate aircraft take advantage of the advanced animations in FSX to operate with airport service vehicles.

For more information and a VERY long list of features, visit www.justflight.com

Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip Mountain Locations Q&A

Q. Can you tell us about the game’s mountain locations?
A. One of the things that’s so powerful about Snowboarding as a sport is that it’s a real ‘pick up and go’ experience and there are phenomenal locations all over the world that people are making great films and pushing the boundaries. So in that sense, it was really difficult for us to try and focus our attention on just a few. For the real road trip experience though, we wanted to make sure that we would break boundaries for players and give them a chance to board in hot locations that are out of reach for all but a few. We also wanted to pick locations that had a really unique local feel through the mountain shapes, environmental style and cultural objects, although we tended to have a bit of fun with the latter.

Q. What are some differences in the gameplay between each location?
A. Through these existing differences in our locations, we then built our events for each mountain around the spaces themselves. For example, in Canada, players are going to find a lot of rugged outdoor beauty, long gentle slopes but with enough man-made jumps and obstacles to keep them on their toes. Canada’s a great place to hone your skills, challenge yourself and look for new paths that will push your last time. Compare that to Chile, where we look at the openness of the mountain and the beauty of nature from a much more angular and, frankly, frightening fashion. The mountains are steeper, the obstacles are natural and the surroundings are harsh and unforgiving. Players have to find ways to work with the mountain’s own lines or they’re going to have a lot more trouble finding their way down. In other locations like Japan and Park City, we move towards a more technical style of boarding and give players a setup that allows them to push themselves to the limit in an environment that was crafted specifically for competition. This is where players are going to find half pipes, rails, big air events and all of the really crazy stuff that you see on TV and say, “they have to be out of their MINDS!” We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to experience that without having to knock out all of their teeth. Between the extremes of technical and big mountain we’ve got the Alps which we’ve built as the more traditional competitive setting. This is the place to go when you want to test your skills directly against AI opponents or, better yet, your buddies…

Q. What are some of your favorite areas to ride in?
A. This has been one of the most amazing things about working on the project. As we built the game we really assumed that we would eventually get tired of playing the maps or that at very least we would ‘cap out’ on our skill level. Neither has turned out to be the case. I keep having a blast on the game every time I play and frequently have to be reminded when I’m demoing to get off and let the people who are supposed to be there to see it have a turn. My scores continue to improve both on the Wii Remote and the Balance Board as I learn new lines to take down the mountain and as I get physically better at maintaining my balance and pushing into jumps at the right moment. That said, from the first time I saw them, I’ve been addicted to the different half pipe levels in the game. To me they’re just such an over the top physical challenge on the balance board and that’s just a completely new thing to me from a design perspective. The rivalry between Antoine Guignard, the game’s producer and I was pretty heated at E3 until he finally defeated me badly enough that I just had to give up. I’m still practicing for a rematch, its full-on Rocky in my basement right now.
Q. Can you give us some examples of the types of maps and challenges the player will face in the game?
A. There’s a lot. We wanted players to have a wide variety of different events to choose from as they went through the game, but more importantly we wanted to make sure that every event would be someone’s favorite event. We’ve got everything from straight races against time to big air events that challenge the player to score as many trick points as possible. There are environmental events that encourage the player to explore the space more fully by picking up garbage off the course, slalom events that combine speed and maneuverability, multiple forms of half pipe event, events that challenge the player to score as many points as possible within a given time and much more. I think more important than this though is that every event in the game is open-ended. What this means is that after you complete any course in the game, you can keep coming back to push yourself harder and harder to beat your old score. This is where the major value of the game has been for me with my friends at home.

The recruitment is limited by two factors, gold and leadership. Even if you have enough gold, it will be necessary to possess enough leadership points if you want to recruit powerful allies.

Halo 3 picks up prestigious Edge Award

Bungie beats Nintendo and Rockstar to scoop gong

Edge – the respected videogames magazine and website, has awarded Halo 3 the prestigious Edge Award for Innovation at this year’s Edinburgh Interactive Festival.

Now in its fourth year, Edge hands out the accolade to the title released in the last 12 months that does most to further the creative culture of gaming – marking out new directions for the form.

This year’s award was a closely fought affair, with Bungie proving victorious in a shortlist that also included Grand Theft Auto IV, Portal, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit.

Edge steeped particular praise on the integration and coherence of Halo 3’s online content, demonstrating an unparalleled understanding of the potential for online console play. Judges believed the Halo 3 stats and communities found on Bungie.net provided life for the game – even when the console was switched off.

Alex Wiltshire is Deputy Editor of Edge:

“Halo 3, just as Halo 2 did before it, presents a roadmap for the way online will be integrated into videogames in the coming years. The game has been incredibly successful and attracted millions of fans, but we shouldn’t overlook all of the ideas that are present in the game, and the remarkably robust manner in which they are presented, Bungie deserved to be credited for their achievements, as they will help shape the future of online games.”

For more information on the Edge Award – please visit www.edge-online.com
