Welcome to the overview of Update 8.6 for World of Tanks! This document contains a detailed guide of the new machines, balance changes, and other tweaks and features introduced in the latest version.
Update 8.6 brings significant changes to game’s core mechanics and a major redesign of tech trees for self-propelled guns that caused rebalance tweaks to all artillery units in the game.
Current Tier 8 SPGs have been promoted to top tiers and the newly introduced vehicles will fill the vacancies in middle tiers, extending the lines for self-propelled guns to Tier 10. Introduction of these new vehicles has added support to top-tier battles by establishing a better power balance between different vehicle classes.
Changes in the formula behind average penetration, damage rolls, and the standard deviation calculation for accuracy have improved the overall game mechanics. Update 8.6 has also introduced changes to the HEAT shells effect, experience gain process, and camouflage system, which increase the effectiveness of armor and results with more emphasis on player skill.
In addition to the new self-propelled guns, World of Tanks has received a new Tier 5 British heavy premium tank, the A33 Excelsior.
New Self-Propelled Guns
Soviet Tree
The USSR SPG line has been added two new vehicles.
The SU-122А SPG that is based on the Soviet Tier 3 tank destroyer SU-76 now occupies the open slot at Tier 5. Agile and maneuverable, the newly added model makes a good defensive vehicle and will suit players who prefer to protect their team’s base.
SU-122А
Pros
Cons
• Small size
• Agile and maneuverable, especially for Soviet arty
• Good credit income
• Good Damage per Minute with 152mm gun
• Below average accuracy
• Slow aim time
• Low shell velocity
Armament:
• 122 mm howitzer M-30
• D-1 howitzer M1943
The second addition to the Soviet tech tree is the Tier 7 SU-14-1, a modified version of the SU-14 equipped with an open-top turret.
SU-14-1
Pros
Cons
• Better speed than the SU-14
• More maneuverable (resembles the Soviet Tier 3 tank destroyer SU-76)
• Mediocre gun range
• Low shell velocity
Armament:
• 152 mm gun M1935 (Br-2)
• 203 mm howitzer M1931 (B-4)
With the addition of the SU-122A, the SU-8 has moved from Tier 5 to Tier 6, while the SU-14-1 has pushed the SU-14 to Tier 8 and the S-51 has jumped to Tier 7. The Object 261 now tops the Soviet SPG line. Tier 9 spot is now by the Object 262.
German Tree
The German tech tree has received SPG additions at tiers 2, 4, and 8.
The Sturmpanzer I Bison has been relocated to Tier 3, while its previous place is taken by the new G.Pz. Mk. VI (e) self-propelled gun, based on the British light tank Mark VI.
G.Pz. Mk. VI (e)
Pros
Cons
• High ammo capacity
• Decent penetration (40-66 mm)
• Highest Damage per Minute for Tier 2 artillery
Low accuracy
Low rate of fire (2.22 r/m)
Equipped with 10.5 cm le. F.H.16 L/22 field howitzer.
The two Tier 3 self-propelled guns are the Sturmpanzer I Bison and the Wespe. Tier 4 offers players either the Sturmpanzer II or the improved Wespe modification—Pz.Sfl.IVb.
Pz.Sfl.IVb
Pros
Cons
• Semi-traverse turret
• Decent dispersion (0.72), especially for artillery
• Great accuracy
• Better weapon stabilization while moving/turning than that of other SPGs
• Very long convergence time (5.5 s)
• Pathetic damage
Equipped with 105 mm caliber 10.5 cm le.F.H. 16 L/22 field howitzer.
The addition of the Pz.Sfl.IVb caused the Sturmpanzer II, Grille, Hummel, and the GW Panther to each move up a tier. The third new German artillery unit—the Tier 8 GW Tiger (P)—is based on the Tiger Porsche tank.
GW Tiger (P)
Pros

Miscellaneous
The camouflage system has been completely reworked. Previously assigned to each vehicle model, camouflage values are now class-based. Camouflage nets and patterns add to a tank's base camouflage value, giving every machine an equal chance of hiding.
Version 8.6 has also added new camouflage patterns for Soviet (1 new winter and 2 new summer patterns), German (1 new desert and 2 summer patterns), French (3 new summer patterns), and American (one new desert pattern) vehicles.
The spotting distance and engagement ranges have been increased.
Tank Company requirements for different classes of tanks have been rebalanced. Now all divisions will have the same requirements for Medium and Heavy tanks, TDs and SPGs.
Murovanka, Widepark, and Airfield have been completely upgraded to the new rendering standard. The Encounter mode has been added to Mines, Lakeville and Redshire. News birds have been added to Ruinberg and Lakeville.
Sacred Valley—the new battle arena set in Asia—gives tankmen an opportunity to fight among white-capped mountains and quaint traditional Korean homesteads.
