Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise project to boost UK industry @ Abertay University

A new multi-million pound Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise (InGAME) project will establish a dedicated research and development centre for the Dundee video games cluster with a view to driving product, service and experience innovation across the industry.

Led by the city’s Abertay University, in partnership with the University of Dundee and the University of St Andrews, the project, announced today (FRI), will offer a high level resource to local, Scottish and UK games companies, benefiting from significant funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Creative Industries Clusters programme and the Scottish Funding Council.

Bring dinosaurs to life on Facebook and Messenger Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom augmented reality

To mark the global 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD release of the monster blockbuster film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (UPHE) has partnered with Facebook and Messenger to unleash sharable in-store and in-home augmented reality (AR) experiences showcasing the film’s notable dinosaurs. The state-of-the-art AR experiences featuring different dinosaurs from the film will debut on September 18th timed to the film’s North American home entertainment launch before rolling out around the world.

The largest retail effort of its kind for both partners, this is also the first integrated AR experience across the Facebook family of apps – specifically Facebook and Messenger.

Ultra Space Battle Brawl (USBB), a competitive local multiplayer party game, in a retro art style heavily influenced by Indonesian culture in look and sound.

A mashup of Street Fighter and Pong on steroids, in USBB you challenge your friends in a frantic battle fighting with a “Pong” ball, which must be hit at an angle to avoid your opponent and destroy the diamond located on the opposite side of the screen - behind said opponent who is moving frantically to block your efforts. It’s easy to pick up and play, but hard to master and could contribute to a fair amount of animosity amongst your friends.

The Spectrum Retreat releases for Nintendo Switch on September 13th

BAFTA Young Game Designer winner, Dan Smith, and publisher, Ripstone Games, are proud to bring its acclaimed sci-fi puzzler The Spectrum Retreat to the Nintendo Switch eShop on September 13th, where it will cost £9.99 €12.99 $12.99. The Spectrum Retreat will be available in Europe and North America, with a release in Germany and Russia to follow later in 2018.

The Spectrum Retreat is the brainchild of Dan Smith, who won the BAFTA Young Game Designers Award in 2016 for his first-person puzzler prototype when he was only 18 years old. Since then, Ripstone’s internal development team has partnered with Smith to evolve his award-winning prototype into a trippy, art deco-inspired sci-fi adventure.

Standalone Battlerite spin-off Battlerite Royale is slated to launch on Steam Early Access on September 26 with a $19.99 €19.99 price tag. Pushing the genre’s boundaries beyond the traditional concept, Battlerite Royale is one of the first top-down action MOBA battle royale games released on Steam, and can be played solo or with a friend.

NBA 2K announces NBA 2K19 MyTEAM Unlimited $250,000 Tournament

BA 2K today announced the NBA 2K19 MyTEAM Unlimited $250,000 Tournament, which will run October 13, 2018-February 13, 2019. The tournament will be played using the new MyTEAM Unlimited Mode, which features 5-on-5 NBA-style gameplay and allows users to choose any 13 cards from their Collection.

32 contestants (16 each on Xbox One & PS4) who qualify during weekly events will advance to a single elimination tournament, scheduled to take place on February 2, 2019. Winners of the Xbox One and PS4 tournaments will be crowned console champions and advance to the Championship Finals, which will be played on Xbox One the week before NBA All-Star Weekend in NYC, and will be contested in a best of 3 format and live streamed on 2K channels.
