Rockstar to patch GTA IV after PC problems

GTA IV

Players are reporting that Grand Theft Auto IV on PC has some major reliability problems - but Rockstar is on the way to the rescue.
"We are aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV on their PCs and we would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible,"
a Rockstar spokesperson told GTAGaming.
"We would ask anyone that is encountering difficulties to contact their local technical support helpline for advice and recommendations. These telephone numbers can be found in the game's manual. "There is also a regularly updated technical support page available on the Rockstar Games website where there are many useful FAQs, and information on how to resolve some common problems being encountered,"
added the statement.

The problems appear to revolve around lengthy validation and astronomic graphics settings that not even the best PCs can utilise. One Steam forum member summed the problems up eloquently. As Kotaku points out, the Steam forums are not the only ones awash with floundering fans: GTAForums and the GTAGaming boards both exhibit large mobs of disgruntled purchasers.

This is a shame, because Grand Theft Auto IV remains a classic game, although the PC conversion - as Kieron Gillen highlights in his review - has a few too many technical hiccups.

All new download Time Trial Map Pack for Mirror's Edge

Leave the city behind! DICE, an Electronic Arts, today announced that the highly acclaimed first-person action adventure title, Mirror's Edge will release downloadable content (DLC) for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system and the PC in late January. DICE also confirmed today that the PC version of the game will ship to retailers in North America on January 13th and worldwide on January 16th, 2009.

Players will be challenged to achieve the fastest times possible on nine races across seven all-new and totally redesigned Time Trial maps. No guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner. This special DLC pack will be available for $10 USD or 800 Microsoft points. As an added bonus, all PLAYSTATION 3 Mirror's Edge fans will be able to download an additional map for free.

"The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror's Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack," says Owen O'Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. "We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game."
Time Trial is a popular mode in Mirror's Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror's Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend's 'ghost' run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.
Mirror's Edge was awarded "Best Xbox 360 Game" at the recent GC Developers Conference in Leipzig, Germany. It also received the "Best Action Game" of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) by IGN and the Game Critics Award for "Best Original Game" at E3 in July. Mirror's Edge delivers players straight into the shoes of Faith, a modern day heroine who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat, fast-paced chases and challenging puzzles. With a never-before-seen sense of movement and perspective, players are drawn into Faith's dangerous world.

THOSE “8 BALL” CARS IN FULL:

• McLaren F1 GTR – The McLaren F1 GTR wrote itself into the history books as the only GT car to ever win Le Mans outright in the modern era and is considered one of the finest examples of automotive engineering in history.

• TVR Cerbera Speed 12 – The TVR 12 smashes past 60 MPH in just under 3 seconds. Production models were planned, but they were considered too powerful to sell to the general public.

• Honda S2000 – This roadster is heavily modified for drifting and has become a cult-favourite thanks to its award winning engine.

• Nissan GT-R (S-G2008) – One of the world’s hottest cars makes its debut in Race Driver: GRID in its fully tuned racing spec.

• VW Nardo – This powerful concept car made real from VW uses its 600BHP engine to rocket to 60MPH in 3.1 seconds.

• Pontiac Firebird Trans AM – The 1971 racing edition of this true American legend is a worthy addition to GRID’s exclusive group of muscle cars.

• Volvo C30 – Adding to Race Driver: GRID’s touring car roster comes the C30, Volvo’s agile, cutting edge hot-hatch straight from the STCC grid.

Video game ratings explained - what parents should know

video game ratings
Games industry trade body ELSPA (the Entertainment Leisure & Software Publishers Association) urge parents, looking to purchase video and computer games for Christmas, to always check the game’s packaging for the PEGI (Pan European Game Information) age ratings and content descriptors. PEGI age ratings appear on game packaging and are intended to protect children and help the public make informed choices when buying games for children. ELSPA believes PEGI empowers parents to make the right gaming choices for their children.

Games sold in the UK clearly display PEGI ratings - a pan-European gaming-specific rating system instigated and used by all the major games publishers across Europe. PEGI age ratings provide a reliable indication of the suitability of the game content for the protection of minors.

The PEGI ratings are as follows:
PEGI 3+ - The game content is considered suitable for all age groups.

PEGI 7+ - The game may contain some violence of a non-realistic nature in relation to fantasy characters, which might be frightening to very children but is considered suitable for those aged 7 and over.

PEGI 12+ - The game may include instances of violence of a non-realistic nature, but only towards fantasy characters. There is no violence towards human-looking characters or recognisable animals. Suitable for players aged 12 and over.

PEGI 16+
- Adult behaviour and violence can start to look life-like. Suitable for players 16 and over.

PEGI 18+
- The adult classification is applied to games that are suitable only for an adult audience. Subject matter and graphical details can mirror levels of detail in the storytelling found in adult television programmes and movies. Suitable for those 18 years old and over.

What does "gone gold" mean? It means that the game code has been "frozen" and a final release candidate has been created. It does NOT mean that the game is ready for release yet.
We now need to finalize testing, proof all the print materials, create and test the installers, and prepare our online delivery system for the downloads. A firm release date as well as info about pre-orders will be announced Sunday, December 7th (yes, that's a historic date).

The game is a stand-alone third part of the series, does not require any previous games to play, and will cost $45.
