Nokia N-Gage gaming platform closed

If only Nokia had the foresight in early 2008 to scrap the N-Gage idea and focus on an app store

While the gaming industry is busy celebrating today over the Golden Joysticks awards, there's one company which is looking at its gaming division with a rather sour expression - Nokia. They've never had much luck with their N-Gage gaming platform, whether it be N-Gage devices which launched in 2003, or just their N-Gage downloads store, but finally it looks like they're set to scrap it completely.

New Nokia N97 phone - iPhone video games rival - with video

Nokia will start shipping its new flagship mobile computer, the N97, to more than 75 countries on June 09.

Carphone Warehouse, the UK's largest mobile phone retailer, will be stocking it from 26 June, kicking off with 18-month contracts with Orange and followed by T-Mobile and O2, a company spokesman said.

Along with a tilting 3.5in touch screen, qwerty keyboard and a fully customisable home screen, the Nokia N97 will offer instant access to a range of applications via Nokia's Ovi store.

"The N97 is an important step towards our vision of delivering a highly personalised internet experience," said Jonas Geust, vice-president and head of Nokia Nseries.

Intended to recapture ground lost to Apple's iPhone, the N97 is Nokia's first device to feature a home screen that users can customise with a range of widgets to bring live information directly to the device. These widgets include social networking destinations like Facebook and Hi5, news services from Associated Press, Bloomberg and Reuters, as well as shopping and weather information.

The Ovi Store, which emulates Apple's App Store, regarded as the key to the iPhone's popularity, offers easy access to applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services, and more. Users can access paid and free content from content providers and developers, including Paramount Pictures, Facebook and Qik, as well as a Twitter applications.

The N97 supports multiple high-speed connections and has 32GB of storage (up to 48GB using a microSD card), enough to store tens of thousands of songs.

Nokia also launched a noise-cancelling Bluetooth stereo headset as a companion piece to the N97 as well as being compatible with a diverse range of other mobile and music devices.

For still and 30 frames per second video images it uses the five megapixel camera with integrated Carl Zeiss optics from the N95. Users can geo-tag image to specific locations and share them via Ovi Share, Twitter or Flickr, if the local networks support these services.

Nokia launch new mobile gaming system

Nokia has lifted the veil on its revamped mobile gaming service known as N-Gage.
Visitors to the N-Gage website can download software that connects their phone to the handset maker's growing library of games.

Nokia expects to have about 30 games available for playing on its higher end phones by the middle of 2008.
The launch of N-Gage marks one of the biggest moves by a mobile maker into the content market.

The official unveiling of N-Gage is due to take place on 7 April. However, Nokia announced on its N-Gage blog that fans of mobile gaming could get access a few days early.

By visiting the N-Gage site gamers can download the software package that sets up the service on their handset.
The April launch comes after two delays which pushed back its debut from 2007.

Nokia's original plans for N-Gage revolved around a gaming gadget that debuted in late 2003.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Content Creation Challenge

Disruptive Media Publishers Announce Xbox 360 Content Creation Challenge

Nokia-Sponsored Contest Brings User-Generated Theme Artwork to the Xbox 360

Disruptive Media Publishers, the leading provider of lifestyle customization content (gamer pictures and themes) for Xbox LIVE on Xbox 360, today announced the official launch of the DP Content Creation Challenge. This marks the first time that individual artists have had the opportunity to get their unique content published on Xbox LIVE Marketplace as downloadable Xbox 360 themes, which can then be purchased by the over 10+ million members using Microsoft Points. The contest kicks off on March 17, 2008, and runs until April 28, 2008.

“Since the launch of the Xbox 360, users have constantly demanded the ability to create and distribute their own unique themes, and this has never been possible…until now,” said Clay Branson, Marketing Director for Disruptive Media Publishers. “This contest allows digital art creators a unique opportunity to bring their designs to the largest social network in the living room, with more than 10+ million Xbox LIVE members around the globe and 2.6 million instant messages, text and voice messages sent daily on Xbox LIVE.”

Nokia is the official sponsor of DP’s Content Creation Challenge. Nokia’s new offering is the Nokia N81, which is N-Gage compatible. “This contest is offering Nokia a great way to engage our N-Gage audience where they live and play,” said Nick Malaperiman, Nokia’s head of global marketing 3rd-party games. “We are looking forward to seeing the unique creations that result from the Challenge.”

Xbox LIVE Marketplace is home to more than 9,000 pieces of downloadable gaming and entertainment content and to date there have been over 400 million individual downloads of this content. Some of the most unique content allows for customization of the Xbox 360 system. This customization includes custom faceplates to change the external appearance of the console, as well as themes and gamer pictures that can be used throughout the entire console environment. Themes, which can include up to four unique images, allow users to customize their Xbox 360 user interface. Other personalization includes the player’s Gamer Picture, which is a unique visual identity displayed to the rest of the gaming community.

The Contest Details:
Users can visit www.my360theme.com, where they will find detailed instructions and a content template. Once material has been created to the proper specs, a simple file upload tool will allow users to transfer their content & associated information to DP’s servers. Upon submission, users can also choose to be affiliated with a specific Xbox 360 community partner.

After an internal quality review process, approved content will appear in a community gallery page on www.my360theme.com, where individuals vote to determine the top content. Real-time voting tabulates the top individual themes based on the number of votes received. At the conclusion of the contest, the top individual theme (as voted on by the community) will be officially published to Xbox LIVE Marketplace and, along with having content for purchase by Xbox LIVE users, will receive a grand prize package that includes a 42” HDTV and surround sound home theatre system, a library of Xbox 360 games, a Blu-ray DVD Player and a Nokia N81. More detailed rules are available at www.my360theme.com.

Dynamic leaderboards will also track a “community score” based on cumulative votes for themes affiliated with a community partner. In addition to the individual prizes, the community partner with the highest score will receive additional prizing, including an Xbox 360 game library and electronic store gift cards. DP’s participating community partners include:

• 360style.net
• 360sync
• 360voice.com
• Evil Avatar
• Hawty McBloggy
• Platform Nation
• The10k.com
• Unscripted 360
• Xbox Addict

Nokia to delay N-Gage cellphone revamp

Nokia N81

Testing has uncovered "issue" needing to be addressed

Nokia has announced another delay in its N-Gage First Access platform, originally scheduled for a November launch.

The pre-release version, was going to work only on Nokia N81 or N81 8GB phones and was to feature one or more games. Those with access to the application could post feedback and make suggestions on the company's forums.

Now, however, even the pre-release version of the revamped N-Gage platform has been delayed.

"We know all of you are eager to get started with N-Gage First Access, and we are just as eager to get it into your hands and start hearing your feedback. We have teams of people around the world, literally, working overtime to deliver this experience to you," said a statement on the official N-Gage blog.

"Unfortunately, as can sometimes happen in software development, unexpected difficulties can occur. We have been doing an internal run with more than 1,000 global testers this week, and during this process we uncovered an issue we feel we need to address.

"Overall, the games and service are working smoothly, but because of this issue, we feel we could not release N-Gage First Access before the holidays as planned."

While working on a solution, and carrying on extensive internal testing over the holidays, Nokia plans to "polish the overall experience" even as it readies more games.

Nokia released the original N-Gage, a combination phone, handheld gaming device, MP3 player, PDA, and FM radio, in 2003. A year later, a subsequent redesign - the N-Gage QD - removed radio reception and MP3 playback features.

The latest iteration of the N-Gage is an application, built into or downloaded to a supported Nokia phone, that acts as a central hub for content including games.
