The Secret World Dark Days are Coming cinematic video game trailer...

characters with guns and swords in their game outfits
Dark days are coming. The words are now everywhere. After deciding to make the development its next massively multiplayer online game a little less secret, Funcom have now released information, artworks and the first ever trailer video for ‘The Secret World’.

"It is great to finally be able to talk about The Secret World, after several years in the dark," says senior producer and director Ragnar Tørnquist. "The real world is such a rich and fascinating setting for an MMO, and we are able to draw inspiration from ancient history, stories of lost cities and forgotten civilizations, folktales, urban legends, conspiracy theories and pop culture. We are building a game that mixes modern day Earth with terrifying monsters, dark and occult magic, cool weapons and awesome powers - and it's unlike anything you have ever seen before in an MMO."

‘The Secret World’ takes place in our own, modern-day world. Players can explore locations such as New York, London, and Seoul, as they unravel the mysteries, legends and myths that make up our world and its history. But the real and realistic will clash with the unreal and fantastical, as the darkness of the secret world approaches. Not only will ‘The Secret World’ offer a setting never before experienced in an MMO, Funcom is also expanding on the genre standards by introducing gameplay that is not based on classes or levels. Players will have the freedom to become whatever they want to be and play however they want to play, allowing them to explore the world at will and master anything from voodoo and black magic to martial arts and modern firearms.

half life gamezplay viral
The following video is either a viral Half Life 2: Episode 3 teaser, or it's simply a demo from a talented film student. You decide.

The production values are incredibly high in the following video, posted by YouTube member Timacious, featuring impressive CG post-production effects and motion tracking.

Featuring content clearly inspired by Half Life 2, you'll find mentions of Black Mesa and other obvious visual cues. The question is, is this a viral video for the highly anticipated third episode in Half Life 2 since it very much captures the spirit of the franchise.

Glasgow Scotland (my home town), Axis animation, produced Killzone 2 Intro movie...

killzone-glasgow-video-game-movieAxis is an award winning animation studio, based in Glasgow, Scotland, dedicated to creating the best in animation and visual effects for commercials, broadcast, film and interactive entertainment. Recent credits include BAFTA winning Colin and Cumberland for the BBC, D&AD nominated Codehunters short film for MTV Asia and video game trailers for Colin McRae DiRT, Heavenly Sword, Crysis, Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Killzone.

Watch the trailer...

Axis back in the Killzone

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Guerrilla Games called on Axis yet again to deliver a breathtaking sequence for the next installment of the epic Killzone game franchise. Killzone 2 is set two years after the Helghast assault on Vekta and the ISA are now taking the fight to the enemy’s home world of Helghan.

Directed at Axis by Stuart Aitken this cinematic intro saw Aitken and the Axis team execute one of their most ambitious projects to date. Sony’s Creative Services Group, who had been developing the creative idea and script alongside the team at Guerrilla, initially approached Axis with their ideas. It was then that Aitken became involved with further development being done between the three companies.

The sequence starts with the familiar tones of Brian Cox reprising his role as the Helghan leader Scolar Visari. Echoing the cinematic intro to the first Killzone game, also created by the Axis team, Visari's impassioned speech to the Helghan people provides an emotional backdrop to the entire sequence.

killzone 2 patch 1.11 video gameThe opening camera pullback soon reveals that Visari is in fact being televised via an ISA news report within ISA command, watched intently by Killzone 2's principle character, Sev. From this initial shot the camera continues in one three minute long unbroken cut, taking the viewer on an epic journey as we follow the ISA invasion fleet departing from their base on Vekta, out into interplanetary space and down into the hostile atmosphere of the planet Helghan.
‘When we were offered the opportunity to work with Sony and Guerrilla again on Killzone we jumped at the chance’ says Axis Executive Producer Richard Scott. ‘We spent a lot of time during the pitch phase exploring different styles and look development for the intro and it was clear to Sony that we were passionate about the project’.
Following the pitch phase and with the decisions made as to the look of the intro, Aitken and his team launched into the pre-production stages working on storyboards and 2d animatics. This process allowed them to plan how the single camera move would work.
‘The storyboarding and development of the 2d animatic was just the start of a long road to getting the camera move to work’ says Aitken. ‘After we had the 2d animatic working in terms of overall framing and timing we moved over to 3d layout where we had to work very hard to get the camera motion to work across the vast distances and changes of scale involved. In one shot we go from a scale where one persons eye fills the entire frame to sweeping past planets alongside tumbling mile long spaceships and back again – this was definitely the most challenging camera move we had ever attempted!’ he continued.
There were other major challenges to be faced by the Axis team. The sequence features some of the studios best character work, especially visible on the Scolar Visari character that bookends the intro at the start and in a final reprise at the end. The fact that he is seen in extreme close up with all the focus on his performance that this entails, meant that the team had to pay a lot of attention, to wrinkles, blemishes, skin shaders and facial deformation to ensure a suitably impressive result.

In addition the sequence features a huge range of complex visual effects including dramatic ship explosions, dense planetary atmospheres filled with storm clouds, battlefield smoke, slow motion ground explosions and gruesome blood splatters. ‘Working in the Killzone world is always a challenge and a pleasure.’ says Axis Producer Debbie Ross. ‘It is so rich in terms of back story and detail. Guerilla always work very hard to establish a distinct look and style that it is important for us to follow – its always clear which direction the look should take.’

The Axis team was supplied with some game assets to work from, which were converted for use within the studios pipeline, including converting the game engine normal maps into true detailed displacements to increase the levels of detail. Axis also had to pay a lot of attention to recreating the visual look of the game, as the player would experience it on the PlayStation 3 platform. However not all the assets required for the intro existed at the time of production so it was down to the Axis modeling team to create models for various characters, locations and vehicles including Visari, the ISA Command base and various the spacecraft.
‘Killzone 2 was being described as one of the best games visually on a console and it was important that we delivered all of that quality and more’ Ross continued.
Axis worked with their motion capture partners Audiomotion to deliver all the character animation and then created additional keyframe animation where required.

This additional animation was accomplished via Axis' in-house rigging setup that allows additive manual edits to be seamlessly layered on top of the underlying motion captured data. All of the facial animation, including that of Scolar Visari, was keyframed and needed complex muscle setup to get a full range of facial movement. The Axis pipeline, which had to deliver to the highest level on all fronts for this project, combines several off the shelf 3d tools with proprietary plug-in additions and scripted stages to transfer data from one package to another.

Assets were processed and created in Modo, Z-brush and Maya, exported to Maya, where they were rigged and animated, then exported to Houdini which was used as the primary 3d application for all the final stages in the project including shading, lighting, rendering and visual effects. All layers where rendered using Mantra, Houdini's own renderer before being composited in Digital Fusion.

Grading and finishing was done on Flame at Scramble in London and the very talented team in-house at Guerrilla Games completed all sound design and music.
‘We have been blown away by the amazing reaction from both the client and the game buying public to this piece of work,’ says Richard Scott. ‘We always look forward to a huge challenge and this project definitely threw a lot of those our way!’

Military action franchise Blacklight to become video game...

backlight movie video gameIndependent video games developer Zombie Studios has reached an agreement with Fox Atomic, a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, and production company Union Entertainment to develop its military action franchise “Blacklight” as a feature film, comic book series and video game. The announcement was made jointly by Zombie CEO Mark Long, Fox Atomic President Debbie Liebling, and Union President Richard Leibowitz.

An original property created by Zombie Studios, “Blacklight” is a covert military action epic set twenty-five years in the future. The three companies will work together on a movie and comic book series to be produced by Fox Atomic and a multi-platform video game that will be produced by Zombie.

Both the film and the video game will be written by Jason Dean Hall, a veteran writer whose latest film, SPREAD, sold at Sundance to Summit. He is also writing projects for DreamWorks and Universal.

“We are excited by the huge potential “Backlight” has to succeed across multiple platforms - theatrical features, comics books, and video games,” said Liebling, “it offers us a remarkable franchise opportunity for film.”

“From the start, I have envisioned ’Blacklight’ as a story that spans all of the forms of media I enjoy most,” stated Long. “It’s an ambitious project and I’ve been fortunate to find partners at Fox Atomic and Union who share that same vision. We are cooperating on the comic, game and movie at levels that are unprecedented in the industry.”

“'Blacklight' plays to Union’s strengths as a film and game production company, allowing us to help bring a great property to consumers in both media,” added Leibowitz, a producer on the project.

Richard Leibowitz will produce and Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will executive produce for Union. Mark Long, in addition to developing the video game, will serve as an executive producer on the feature. Zak Kadison and R. Eric Lieb will oversee for Atomic.

The “Blacklight” film, video game, and comics will feature the same characters and high caliber military action, but with unique, intersecting storylines that complement each other. No release dates for any of the properties have yet been announced.

Critical Mass Interactive create video effects for film The 2 Bobs

two bobs movieVoodoo Cowboy Entertainment and Texas Avenue Films, producers of the video games-themed film The 2 Bobs, today announced the film’s world premiere as part of SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, scheduled for Monday, March 16 at the Paramount Theatre. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tim McCanlies, the film features game-specific visual effects developed and produced by Critical Mass Interactive, a leading U.S. game developer based in Austin.

The 2 Bobs is a feature film written and directed by filmmaker Tim McCanlies, best known for his direction and screenwriting on films such as the animated hit film “The Iron Giant” and family flick “Secondhand Lions,” starring Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Kyra Sedgwick. McCanlies has carved out a unique piece of filmmaking territory in his career, also credited for conceptualizing the popular Warner Brothers TV show, “Smallville,” based on the DC Comics character Superman. By all accounts, The 2 Bobs presents edgier fare than McCanlies’ usual work, with a keen eye on pervasive geek culture, with video games as the central theme.

Matt Scibilia, President and Co-founder of Critical Mass Interactive, Inc., offers, “As an established game development company with significant film-quality animation talent on deck, we had both the necessary production experience and game playing interest to lend the needed visual effects to the film, as well as have an understanding of a game player’s aesthetic choices. This project broke ground for us, as we were able to apply our visual technology and techniques to the overall look of the film, but also bring believability to the game designed by the film’s main characters.”
Scibilia adds, “Our team utilized standard game development methodology to generate the avatars for the actors, prepping the assets for the Unreal 3 game engine. The 3D characters and environments prepared and rendered for the film are optimized for next generation gameplay in Unreal. We built an actual ‘Cataclysm’ game based upon the movie characters from these visual effects assets. It was a fun ride using our game industry methods for a feature film, and we are pleased with the end result.”

Mark Mueller of Voodoo Cowboy Entertainment, producer and chief financier for The 2 Bobs, state, “We knew we needed realistic game play elements in the film to make the main character’s experience credible to our audience. By bringing in an expert game development and visual effects team like Critical Mass Interactive, we succeeded in artfully blending the two worlds of game play and the character’s experience in the film.”

The 2 Bobs is a video game geek comedy based in Austin, Texas. The story follows two gaming legends known as The 2 Bobs. But just as they finish their ground-breaking violent video game masterpiece, these gaming gurus discover their precious game software has been stolen - and with it, their livelihoods, genius reputations, and everything they own. To get back their game - and their lives -The 2 Bobs and their fellow-geek employees Munch, Doofus and The Dark Prince are forced to ‘turn detective’ and plunge into the strange world of Christian Venture Capitalists, aged Dixie Mafia hoodlums, and bizarre Internet Spammers that inhabit Austin.

The film’s cast features an eclectic array of accomplished young acting talent, including Devin Ratray (Home Alone, Law & Order, Third Watch, The Flying Scissors), Tyler Francavilla (Law & Order, Roommates, Boston Public), Cody Kasch (Desperate Housewives, The Practice, ER), Leonardo Nam (He’s Just Not That Into You, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Perfect Score) and Mika Boorem (Blue Crush, Dawson’s Creek, Riding in Cars with Boys). Local heroes playing on a national stage, juggler-cum-actor/writer Turk Pipkin and film criticism savant Harry Knowles make memorable cameo appearances as well.

The film’s producers, along with Mueller (Downloading Nancy, 2009 Sundance selection starring Maria Bello, Jason Patric and Rufus Sewell), are Anne Walker-McBay (Before Sunset, Scanner Darkly, Dazed and Confused) and Seth Caplan (In Search of a Midnight Kiss, Flatland: The Movie, Teenage Dirtbag), while PJ Raval is the film’s cinematographer (Trouble the Water, nominated for an Academy Award this year).
The 2 Bobs kicks off with a preview screening for SXSW festival attendees on Friday, March 13 at 6:45 pm at the Austin Convention Center. Hosted by Voodoo Cowboy Entertainment, The 2 Bobs cast and crew premiere party is open to SXSW badgeholders and will be held at Aces on 6th St. from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday, March 14. The cast and crew premiere party features competitive game players and former Frag Dolls Alyson Bridge (“Nin9tyNin9”) and Alex Herbert (“Tart”) competing against party guests on Halo 3. Game competitors have a chance to win a brand new Epiphone electric guitar, donated by Gibson Guitars.

The main event is the film’s world premiere for the public, scheduled for Monday March 16 at 6:30 pm at the Paramount Theatre at 713 Congress Avenue. The film premiere will include a Q&A session with filmmaker Tim McCanlies, along with members of the principal cast and production team. Film screening tickets for The 2 Bobs are available at the Paramount Theatre box office shortly before show time. Tickets are $10 and are available on a first-come basis, with precedence given to SXSW badgeholders.

Resident Evil 4 movie to be shot in Toronto?

Resident Evil 4 movie
While nothing has been confirmed, Moviesonline is reporting that Sony Screen Gems is now prepping to shoot Resident Evil 4 in Toronto.

"Rumors are circulating to us by a VERY trusted source who so far has never been wrong that RESIDENT EVIL 4 will be coming to Toronto Canada to film." Remember to keep this filed under rumor until some confirmation.

I personally think this is a oad of crap considering there's no director, writer or actors attached to the project yet.
