Pay what you want for Championship Manager video game 'sold for a penny' as first time that a pay-what- you-want model has been tried with videogames

championship manager box artFans of the popular football video game Championship Manager will be able to choose how much to pay for the new version of the title.
Developer Eidos is offering a download of the game from a penny, along with a £2.50 transaction fee.
It is the first time that a pay-what- you-want model has been tried with video games, said the developer.

UK rock band Radiohead used a similar sales strategy in 2007 with its album In Rainbows.

A survey found that nearly two-thirds of downloaders paid nothing for the album.

The new game will be available to download until 10 September, when the price will rise to £29.99.

Additional content for the game will be sold throughout the year, costing £5 for six updates.

"This is the first time an initiative like this has ever been tried in the videogames market," said Roy Meredith of Eidos.

Final Fantasy - Square Enix suffers annual profit drop

image
Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest publisher, Square Enix, has announced full year financial results for the twelve months ending March 31, 2009, noting that both sales and profits dropped during that time.

The company, which recently acquired Tomb Raider publisher Eidos, saw revenues fall by 8 per cent compared to the previous year at JPY 135.7 billion (USD 1.44 billion), while net income dropped 31.1 per cent to JPY 6.3 billion (USD 67 million).

Despite that, the company ended the year in a strong cash position, up JPY 400 million (USD 4.25 million) to JPY 111.9 billion (USD 1.2 billion), while the total dividend payout will be JPY 3.45 billion (USD 36.7 million).

The figures reveal that the company's key expense was salary payments, hitting almost JPY 16 billion (USD 170.2 million) and up nearly JPY 2 billion (USD 21 million) on the previous year.

The majority of sales came from the Amusement division under the Taito group, although that segment made a loss on high operating expenses. Offline games made the highest profit, followed by mobile phone content and publications.

The company is currently working on the latest instalment of the Final Fantasy franchise - Final Fantasy XIII - which will be the series' first foray on to the Xbox 360 platform.

Warner backs Square Enix bid for Eidos

logos
Hollywood studio, and 20 per cent Eidos stakeholder, will vote in favour of publisher acquisition

Warner has thrown its weight behind Square Enix's bid to buy UK publisher Eidos.

The news comes following the announcement last week that Square had made an offer to buy the ailing Britsoft firm.

Time Warner owns a 20 per cent stake in Eidos, and although it was often seen as one of the frontrunners alongside Squre to buy the publisher, it would have had to accept the bid or place a higher bid itself.

But this morning Warner and Square Enix announced that the former has 'irrevocably' agreed to support the Japanese publisher's plans to takeover Eidos.

MCV predicted last year that the firm was a surprise contender to buy Eidos - other spectators regularly put EA and Ubisot in the frame.

Square Enix, through its dealings with the management and now Time Warner, has the backing of shareholders responsible for 35 per cent of Eidos stock.

The firm's board is to vote on the final acquisition at the end of March, but with so much momentum behind the buy already - and Eidos management's pledge to fully back the acquisition - it seems unlikely they will vote against it.

Square's bid last week was estimated at around £84m - around 129 per cent Eidos' market value.

The current bid could still fall through, should Square Enix fail to post the scheme details for its planned takeover of Eidos or a third party step forward to make an alternative bid. Both are unlikely at this stage - Eidos has been courting various buyers on and off over the last year.

Eidos products cover a raft of genres with Western appeal, something Square Enix has been vocally seeking for the past two years. Its slate of studios and IP would complement Square’s activity and plug the gaps in its line-up.

Coming in April, all four of the new maps will be released in one downloadable pack entitled ‘The Dope Bag’. Each of the four maps features its own unique scenario: take on the local dope dealers and the Russian mafia at an LA construction site in ‘Clean Cut’, clash with the Yakuza in Tokyo in ‘Hooker’s Trail’, raid a drug baron’s mansion in a Venezuelan jungle in ‘Flying High’ and ambush General Fuentes’ military convoy in the streets of Havana to steal the gold hidden in his vehicles in ‘Hasta La Vista’.

Get ready for war on an epic scale with BATTLESTATIONS: PACIFIC

Eidos Interactive Ltd., one of the world’s leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, can today confirm that Battlestations: Pacific, the official sequel to 2007’s acclaimed Battlestations: Midway, will be released on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows.

Set in WWII, Battlestations: Pacific delivers intense, action-packed combat and strategic warfare on an extraordinary scale and features two distinctly different single player campaigns. As the Americans, the game picks up the story where Battlestations: Midway left off and allows players to fight their way from The Battle of Midway to Okinawa as they try to secure peace in the Pacific. As the Japanese however, players take control of the Imperial Japanese fleet and have the unique chance to fight at Pearl Harbor before attempting to change the course of history and take full control of the Pacific Ocean.

Battlestations: Pacific offers a unique blend of action and strategy, as players must plan their moves carefully on huge open-world arenas and then fight in the air, above sea and underwater as they take direct control of their units and storm into combat. Join forces with friends online or play solo against the computer controlled opponents in the all-new Skirmish mode or battle each other in one of the five new, innovative multiplayer modes.

“Battlestations: Pacific is even bigger, more authentic and innovative than ever before, taking the Battlestations franchise to the next level and allowing players to relive some of the most memorable battles in modern history, as well as gain an insight into what could have been, should Japan have gained the upper hand against the United States,” said Trevor Burrows, Brand Manager at Eidos. “We have been paying great attention to our loyal online community and fan base to ensure that Battlestations: Pacific delivers the most exciting, authentic and fun Battlestations experience yet!”

Battlestations: Pacific features a massive US and Japanese single player campaign with over 28 story missions, double the size of the previous Battlestations: Midway. The game also features 21 new units, including kamikaze and other WWII jets and units. Players can now experience for the first time a whole new level of depth of gameplay while taking direct control of the infamous Ohka and other Japanese air units that terrorised the Pacific Ocean during WW2.

For the first time, the game also includes the tactical landing of troops in battle. Launch your parachute squadrons with pin-point accuracy or ensure the safe passage of your landing craft and watch your battalions of troops capture key locations, man the defensive artillery and gain a strategic foothold to support your offensive efforts.

Battlestations: Pacific is set for release on Xbox 360 and Games For Windows.

Return of Sense of Play at
London Games Feastive

Pixel-Lab and the London Games Festival Fringe are proud to announce the return of Sense of Play, a one-day symposium which explores the gentle and not-so-gentle art of computer game design. Looking beyond the current generation of game technologies and platforms, the event aims to promote lively debate on the nature of game design and the role of the game designer: what this means to different people both inside and outside the computer games industry.

Sense of Play 07 features keynotes from game design veteran and online multiplayer pioneer Raph Koster, whose current project Metaplace promises once again to break even more new ground in online game world design; Georg Backer of Lionhead Studios, who has been instrumental in embedding drama and emotional impact in the design of Fable 2; and Stephen Goss, newly appointed Head of Design at UK games publishing giant Eidos.

The event is sponsored by the University College for the Creative Arts. UCCA’s Master of Arts in Digital Game Design based in its Farnham campus has been a pioneering force in the education and fostering of emerging game design talent for the last four years.

Sense of Play 07 promotes and champions new thinking in game design, where the ‘thinking’ involves both human designers and the software systems they create. Included are sessions from Adam Russell, former AI expert at Eurocom, who looks at how a game’s artificial intelligence affects player behaviour; David Hayward from the Pixel-lab consultancy whose latest work uncovers the so called ‘Uncanny Valley’ in AI, in which an automated character’s behaviour falls off in its believability as it approaches an approximated model of ‘realism’; and Jon Weinbren of Imaginary Productions and UCCA Farnham’s Head of Game Design, who will give an overview of some current creative and technical research challenges from both an academic and industry perspective.

A panel discussion probes the role of the game designer in an industry that many believe to be in something of a state of flux. It also looks at game design training and education: given that game designers are considered to be key to the medium’s creative future, how can we best equip emerging talent to square up to the considerable challenges they face as the industry evolves?

The symposium will be complemented by a showcase of new work from recent graduates of the MA Digital Games Design programme at UCCA Farnham. In addition, Frank Boyd and collaborators from the Festival Fringe’s Play/Time ARG Lab will be presenting ideas and projects which have been developed during this week-long workshop.

Commenting on his involvement, Raph Koster describes Sense of Play as “…an important forum for exploring issues in game design, because the games we make today are helping to shape the minds of a generation”.

Rob Cooper, Ubisoft’s Managing Director for Northern Europe adds: “Ubisoft believes that creativity and innovation is the most important function of our business at the moment. Sense of play provides a unique foundation to look at ways we can all push the boundaries of game design and interactive storytelling, and we are really excited to be supporting this event as part of the London Games Festival Fringe.”

Sense of Play symposium takes place on Friday 26th October, 20076 9.15am – 5.00pm at The Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, London W1D 3NE .

Entry is free but places are limited,
