Apple sell more iPhone games but Android is top for Apps

android logoThe majority of sales undertaken via the App Store are for games, while Android users are buying more tools and applications, according to research carried out by app store analytics company Distimo.

Studying the top 15 applications purchased for the iPhone, the report found nine of them were games, while not one game made the Android top 15. On the flipside, not one productivity or utilities app appeared in Apple's top 15.

This pattern continued when comparing the most popular free applications for the two hardware types, where games made up a third of the iPhone's most popular downloads and none of Android's.

Despite an obvious bias towards gaming on the App Store however, Apple's strict vetting process and policy of not allowing emulators on the device could be seen to be harming its sales.

"Classic games on Android Market are more popular than in the Apple App Store, with even three out of the 15 most popular games for Android being emulators," the report said. "These types of emulators are not allowed in the Apple App Store."

A recent example of this ban saw a C64 emulator being banned from the App Store but allowed for release on Android, despite it being legally licensed, according to a TouchArcade report.

Go! Go! Rescue Squad! Video game on major consoles and PC

Go! Go! Rescue Squad!‘Go! Go! Rescue Squad!’ will release first as a downloadable PC product in February 2009. The game will be released on iPhone next with mobile formats arriving in April 2009, including Windows Mobile and Android. An Xbox Live Arcade version is in development, and the company is exploring routes to market for a Nintendo DS version later in the year making Go! Go! Rescue a true, multi-platform, brand.

The initial release, as a downloadable PC game, places Go! Go! Rescue Squad! firmly in the casual games sector, an area which Connect2Media Directors have had much success in before. CEO of Connect2Media, Eric Hobson, commented, “The global web release enables us to get the game out to a massive audience from the off. Already there is a community building for the brand on-line and the release will fuel this making it a ‘must play’ title.”

Peter Scott, Connect2Media’s CTO, said “Our experience of the game is that if people play it, they fall in love with it, and so discovery via the web release will be a key part of the strategy for building a major brand. We also feel that this is a perfect product for today’s casual games market having had a number of hits in the past with games that have taken on a life of their own when released online.”

The Go! Go! Rescue Squad! brand is designed to have mass market appeal to both male and female audiences. The game has been developed at the company’s Manchester development studio and sees the player taking on the role of a brave firefighter in order to save ‘Darwins’, the hapless inhabitants of the town.

The game has a wide appeal combining compelling gameplay, original character and level design and unique gameplay mechanics in 64 puzzle packed levels over six themed districts. Gameplay sees the firefighter squad doing everything they can to save the various Darwins from fire, floods and explosions. The game has a gentle learning curve but its size and variety of levels gives it plenty of depth and hours of gameplay.

Brain Exercise game for your mobile...

Namco Networks, a leading publisher and developer of mobile games and entertainment for mass-market casual gamers, today announced the availability of Brain Exercise across US national carriers. This game is scientifically proven to stimulate the brain and challenges players with a seemingly endless supply of fun and addictive puzzlers.

“Namco Networks is all about delivering fun, quality games,” said Scott Rubin, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Namco Networks. “Brain Exercise makes training your brain fun. It tracks players’ daily and monthly progress, which makes it hard to put down.”

Namco’s Brain Exercise, which has been a top seller in Europe and Japan, is officially tested by Dr. Kawashima, the man behind the original brain training game on the Nintendo DS. With 10 fun, cranium-crunching categories involving memory, logic, calculations, visual and spatial perception, this is one exercise regime players will want to stick to. Brain Exercise’s categories are:

  • Memory – Flashes a sequence of lights and asks the player to press the corresponding keys to match the sequence
  • Arithmetic – Delivers simple arithmetic questions
  • Rock, Paper, Scissors – The player is instructed to win, lose or draw against an opponent
  • Inverted Numbers – Asks the player to input the numbers on the screen
  • Predominant Numbers – Has the player identify which number appears the most in a crowded screen of numbers
  • Red Minus Blue – Tests the player’s ability to calculate a sum based on blue negative numbers and red positive numbers
  • Shape Construction – Challenges the user to create the target shape out of combining others shapes
  • Answer the Question – Displays a target colored shape and ask the player to count the number of shapes matching the displayed target
  • Rolling Shapes – As a shape rolls, the player determines the final orientation of the shape
  • Follow the Pencil – Has the player predict which goals the pencils will reach

Brain Exercise keeps players’ minds awake and active with a personal coach who keeps you focused and on track as you compete in one of three modes—Brain Training, Brain Age and Practice. In Brain Training Mode, players participate in a daily training regime with three mini-games to stimulate different regions of the brain: the temporal, parietal and frontal lobes. Brain Age Mode tracks the player’s progress with in-depth stat tracking as they work their way towards a younger and sharper brain. During Practice Mode, players can play as many mini-games as desired without the results counting towards your daily training.

Cranking up your cranium with Brain Exercise has wide appeal and is perfect for the casual mobile audience with simple and intuitive controls. It offers a whole-brain workout packed in a mobile phone for instant training anywhere. Brain Exercise offers both a quick exercise break and hours and hours of fun with randomly generated puzzles.
