Gag order? Bah! EGM refuses to review Metal Gear Solid IV

So Konami doesn't want reviewers can't mention the 90 minute cutscenes, the grotesque install size, and other items if they want to review MGSIV? EGM said, "Screw that! We got journalistic integrity over here. Keep your damn MSGIV." Well done EGM.

I’ve been told by two gaming media sources who asked to remain anonymous that Konami representatives had been asking print reviewers to keep some technical details out of their reviews, namely the length of the game’s cut-scenes and the size of the game’s installation on the PlayStation 3. Such details wouldn’t have been plot spoilers. . .

Metal Gear Solid 4: Limited Edition and Pre-Order

Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 leading a Pre-Sales initiative

Konami Digital Entertainment has announced two innovative initiatives for the forthcoming launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PLAYSTATION 3 on June 12th.

In advance of the game’s release, Konami has unveiled a pre-order campaign, which will be allied with key retail partners throughout Europe. Consumers who pre-order a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 can receive an exclusive DVD entitled Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2. This seven-part documentary details the origins of previous Metal Gear games and the evolution of Hideo Kojima’s epic series. This gripping documentary offers a valuable insight into the series and the history of Metal Gear’s iconic hero, Snake.

Scheduled for release on June 12, Konami will also produce a Limited Edition collector’s package. Destined to be a highly sought-after compilation, the package includes a soundtrack CD, a 6” Old Snake action figurine, and an exclusive ‘Making Of’ Blu-ray disc. The Blu-ray disc contains two high-definition documentaries which offer a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the development of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, with interviews with series creator Hideo Kojima and key Kojima Productions personnel. The Limited Edition will carry a £79.99 RRP.

“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is rightly seen as the stand-out title for 2008, and we were determined to come up with something special for its launch,” commented Martin Schneider, European Marketing Director for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “With interest so high, it is only right that we reward fans of the series for pre-ordering the game, and the Metal Gear Saga DVD is a stunning look at how the series has evolved into the phenomenon it has become. Likewise, the Limited Edition is a celebration of all things Metal Gear, and will be prized by those who buy it.”

Konami Reveals More On Metal Gear Online Beta News

Further details for the beta include an in-depth character creation component and the Sons of the Patriots system...

Konami has revealed some more nuggets of information about the Metal Gear Online beta that will be launched on April 17th in Europe alongside the incoming PlayStation Store update. It is set to run from April 21st through until May 6th.

The new info comes from PlayStation.Blog, where Konami's Brandon Laurino detailed the character creation and Sons of the Patriot systems.

Laurino compared the character customisation depth to that of an MMO, boasting a wide variety of skills to master (of which you can select four to specialise in). These include demolition, sniper mastery, close quarter combat, alertness, heavy weapon mastery, quickness, and knife fighting.

The Sons of the Patriots (SOP) system, on the other hand, provides gamers with real-time data on what all their squad mates are doing. This includes their status, where they are, and who they are fighting. Additionally, by scanning the opposing team's link you can intercept their SOP data and share it with your squad.

This is all achieved with the use of nanomachines that have been injected into soldiers so that they can be controlled on the battlefield by private military companies. It'll be another future imperfect in MGS4 then.

Other new information included a list of the weapons and items that will be available in the beta...

As has previously been revealed, the beta will offer four game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture Mission, and Base Mission. Capture Missions exhibit the standard capture the flag setup, whereas Base missions utilise a traditional base capturing format.

There will also be two maps for the beta. Blood Bath has both over and underground areas, while Groznyj Grad is a weapons factory that housed MGS3's Shagohod.

Last, but by no means least, is the catapult, which will propel players across the map and right into the action. Set to offer something similar to the Man Cannons of Halo 3, MGO's catapult will doubtless offer some rollicking good gameplay for beta players to enjoy.

Limited edition gunmetal Sony PlayStation 3 for US

Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed a new PlayStation 3 SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) to accompany the release of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots.

The bundle consists of a gunmetal grey PlayStation 3 complete with game branding and copy of the game, and according to Sony will be a "very, very limited edition" package.

Metal Gear Online - Open Beta in Europe confirmed

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH announced Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta for Kojima Productions' online epic
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced its plans for a public beta program across Europe for its forthcoming Metal Gear Online title for PLAYSTATION®3. Konami will release Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta via the PlayStation Store from April 17th, with online tests running from April 21st through May 6th. An all-new Metal Gear title specifically designed as a multi-player online experience, Metal Gear Online will be released worldwide as part of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on June 12th.

The beta program will offer players a unique chance to sample the innovative multi-player experience of Metal Gear Online, which emphasizes cooperative team-based play. Those downloading the beta will be invited to explore two maps – “Blood Bath” and “Groznyi Grad” – each of which requires unique strategies in order to achieve victory.

Metal Gear Online will launch as part of Guns of the Patriots in June as a Starter Pack, comprising five unique stages: “Ambush Alley,” where trenches and sandbags litter an arena built for close and medium range combat; “Blood Bath,” a two-tier battle setting; and “Groznyi Grad,” the expansive Shagohod development complex from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which features human catapults that propel players to different areas of the environment. Rounding out the five stage set are the dusty, Middle Eastern alleyways found in Guns of the Patriots entitled “Midtown Maelstrom,” and the rooftop settings of “Urban Ultimatum.” Konami is committed to the release of additional Expansion Packs to be released throughout the year.

Up to 16 people can play simultaneously, with game worlds created using Guns of the Patriots’s incredible 3D engine. Retaining the classic stealth combat gameplay of the Metal Gear series, players are dropped in a series of war zones wherein different challenges await. Five game modes await players on stages that span the globe and the history of MGS: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture and Base and Sneaking missions. Additional information on Metal Gear Online and the beta program can be found at www.konami-mgo.com.
