spider man fighting in marvel video game screenshotWalt Disney Co said on Monday it will buy Marvel Entertainment Inc for $4 billion, striking the biggest media deal of the year.

Here are some key facts about Marvel:

* The company has a library of more than 5,000 characters and has been publishing comic books since 1939.

* Marvel has more than a 40 percent market share in comics, graphic novels and magazine publishing, according to a spokesman.

* Its stable of superheroes include Iron Man, the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four and its first blockbuster character, Captain America.

* Spider-Man, whose theatrical rights have been licensed to Sony Pictures, is considered the company's most popular character.

* Many of its characters were created by comic book legends Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

* Marvel enjoyed blockbuster success with "Iron Man," its first self-produced film. Distributed by Viacom's Paramount Pictures and released in 2008, the movie pulled in the second-biggest non-sequel box office opening in history.

* It is currently working on "Iron Man 2," a sequel set for release in 2010.

* Marvel's shares soared in August when it posted a second-quarterly profit that beat market estimates, boosted by DVD and pay TV sales of blockbuster "Iron Man."

* Marvel posted $676 million in revenue in 2008, up 39 percent from $486 million in revenue in 2007.

* The company is headquartered in New York City but has corporate offices in London and Manhattan Beach, California. It has about 300 employees.

* Total market capitalization reached more than $3 billion in 2009.

* Upcoming projects include: "Thor" and the first "Avenger" movie, as well as Sony-produced "Spider-Man 4" slated for a 2011 release. The "Avengers" sequel will follow in 2012.

* Marvel's primary competitor is DC Comics, the company behind the "Watchmen" characters. DC Comics is a subsidiary of Warner Bros, which is owned by Time Warner Inc.

* It operates three divisions: licensing, film production through Marvel Studios, Marvel Animation and publishing via Marvel Comics.

* Marvel has a monthly circulation of more than 4.1 million.

Disney plan epic Mickey game for the Nintendo Wii

disney mickey epic game for nintendo wii beach scene screenEvidence has emerged that Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios is working on a game codenamed "Epic Mickey" for the Wii, offering a dark, steampunk-style take on Mickey Mouse and the Magic Kingdom.

Most of the evidence comes from the rumour-hunter's faithful friend - concept artists' websites - and appears to corroborate a Gamasutra report from late last year that first identified the "Epic Mickey" codename.

Tireless digger Superannuation has turned up the website of concept artist Tony Pulham, whose resumƩ reveals he recently joined Junction Point to work on "Epic Mickey", and identifies it as a Wii game.

Another Superannuation post unearthed some beautiful concepts for "Epic Mickey" on the website of artist Fred Gambino. Pictures show the Mickey Mouse ears adorning a gigantic, crumbling paddle-steamer, the spires of the Magic Kingdom castle perched atop a twisted tower of rock, and a semi-mechanical "Zombie Goofey" [sic].

Meanwhile, a poster on the NeoGAF forum has found what appear to be the same concepts described in the original Gamasutra report, showing more distorted, nightmarish, mechanical versions of classic Disney characters, including the Seven Dwarves. They come from the artist Gary Glover's site.

Disney Interactive Studios bought Junction Point - which Deus Ex mastermind Spector formed with several other Ion Storm alumni - two years ago. Not long after, it was rumoured - notably in American gaming magazine EGM - that Spector was working on a Mickey Mouse platform game intended to rival Mario.

Last year, Spector said that he was "tired of making games about guys in black leather carrying guns" and that "100-hour games are on the way out". He also revealed that Disney Feature Animation and Pixar were collaborating on Junction Point's game.

And there's more. In an archived Edge interview from E3 2006 - before the Disney acquisition - Spector said: "I want to do a cartoon game really bad - well, really good. People don't realise that I did my Masters thesis on Warner Brothers cartoons, you know - I used to teach animation classes, I've been a Disney stockholder since I was 19. I'm a cartoon freak, I've met a bunch of the old WB directors, and did Toon, the cartoon [pen-and-paper] RPG… And I've been trying to get somebody to let me do a cartoon game for the entire time I’ve been in the videogame business."

In that same interview, Spector even alluded to a project that sounds an awful lot like "Epic Mickey". "I did some concept work on a license with a media company that was very cartoony, and boy, we did some great work," he said. "It was the most fun I've had in a long time, maybe since Deus Ex. The work was phenomenal, and I'll never be able to show it or talk about it with anybody. But hopefully the project will happen. We were gonna let people live in a cartoon world, and it was going to be wacky."

A friend of Eurogamer also once spotted Warren Spector wearing a Mickey Mouse backpack and hoodie in public. True story.

Here's hoping Spector's paymasters at Disney allow him to realise some of the extraordinary vision hinted at by those concept images, because it's mouth-watering stuff. And a long way from the Castle of Illusion...

Extreme Skate Adventure PlayStation 2 cheats

Extreme Skate Adventure PlayStation 2 cheatsDisney's Extreme Skate Adventure is a videogame developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision Publishing. The game was created for the PlayStation 2 console from Sony, the original Xbox and the GameCube. It was released in September 2003.

The title is classed as a sports simulation focusing on skateboarding and it's unique because it uses a whole lot of characters taken directly from the Disney animated world. The game is played in 3D using a third person perspective. The engine is that of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 game.
Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure is not in any way a title in the vein of the skate franchise from Electronic Arts or of the Tony Hawk games launched by Activision. Disney wished to make a game that would appeal to the children demographics by combining two elements set to attract them: the Disney universe and skateboarding. You can play as the characters from Toy Story, Lion King and Tarzan, and there are lots of different levels included in each of the worlds. There's also an option for players to create their own universes from scratch.
Each of the characters in the game has a unique look but also a board, moves and collectibles. There are two main game modes: a story-driven one, and the combination of Practice Mode and Freeskate that allows all players to try and pull off the most ridiculous tricks.
