Apple iPhone v Palm Pre compare them here

iphone v palm
Apple and Palm kicked a lot of dirt at each other last week - acting Apple CEO Tim Cook flatly told analysts that "We will not stand for people ripping off our IP" when asked specifically about competition like the Palm Pre, and Palm responded with a similarly-explicit "We have the tools necessary to defend ourselves." At issue, of course, is that the Pre employs a multitouch screen and gestures almost exactly like those made famous on the iPhone - and if you'll recall, Steve Jobs introduced multitouch on the iPhone with a slide reading "Patented!"

To top it all off, the past few days have seen a number of media outlets proclaim that Apple's been awarded a "multitouch patent" without so much as a shred of analysis, instead hyping up a supposed future conflict.

That's just not how we play it, so we enlisted Mathew Gavronski, a patent attorney in the Chicago office of Michael Best & Friedrich, to help us clear up some of the confusion and misinformation that's out there - read on for more on engadget.

Apple iPhone biggest hit of 2008?

Image representing Apple as depicted in CrunchBase

Apple was a busy company in 2008. Over the past twelve months, the number of Apple-branded products on the street has become so broad and ubiquitous that it's hard to go a day without seeing evidence of it, even if you're not a Mac, iPhone or iPod owner.

And while it doesn't appear that Apple plans to slow down any in 2009 -- despite the seemingly endless supply of rumors about the health of CEO Steve Jobs - it's worth reflecting on some of the most notable innovations from Apple in a year that easily ranks as one of the most significant in its 31-year-history.

Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Frogger iPhone games coming...

silent hill iphoneThree of Konami's most popular games to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch platforms, including an all-new version of Metal Gear Solid.

The publisher will release Metal Gear Solid Touch, Silent Hill: The Escape and Frogger for the Apple unit in early 2009, with each game specifically designed to make full use of the iPhone’s unique touch screen capabilities.

Metal Gear Solid Touch focuses on action elements of Hideo Kojima’s classic stealth series, and will see series veteran Solid Snake embark on an all-new mission.

Using locations and characters introduced in Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid Touch initially offers eight action-packed stages, with more to be added at a later date.

The new title gives the player control via the Apple systems’ touch panel, and also allows users to pan in and out of the action.

Replay value is also enhanced via bonuses such as wallpapers and images that are attained by completing key elements within the game.

Similarly, Silent Hill: The Escape brings the doom-laden streets of the series’ titular town to iPhone in an first-person action title boasting new strains of macabre adversaries and a dark, brooding atmosphere.

frogger iphoneThe evergreen Frogger also heads to iPhone in a pixel-perfect conversion of the classic arcade game.

A new generation of gamers can experience the classic 80s coin-op as they steer the little amphibian across a busy street and danger-filled river as he attempts to make it to his lily-pad home in a newly revamped version.

“These are Konami’s first wave of titles for the exciting new devices, and allow us to bring new elements to portable gaming.

We welcome the iPhone and iPod Touch to our product line-up and look forward to these initial games,”

commented Florian Stronk, Head of Mobile Business Department at Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH.

Billy Frontier - iPhone and iPod Touch western video game

Billy Frontier
He's stared down many a bandit (and the occasional orangutan), but to my knowledge, Clint Eastwood never faced off against aliens, ghosts and lizard men hurling barrels of dynamite at him. Still, this would have been interesting to watch—and the idea of it makes for a great game for the iPhone or iPod touch.

Welcome to the world of Billy Frontier.

Where the classic westerns left off, Billy Frontier picks up, with players donning their own tin star in order to drive the bad guys out of town. To complete the game, players must complete six levels featuring three events: two shootouts, two duels and two stampedes—each filled with alien baddies, ample gunfire and hopping kangaroo-bovine mutations known as “kanga-cows”).
The graphics and sound make this game and Billy Frontier flexes its muscles with a 3-D engine that shows the player what the iPhone and iPod touch are truly capable of. Tap into one of the game’s target practice levels, and the cavalcade of lovingly rendered kanga-cows, aliens, lizard men, ghosts, bottles, ammo boxes and power-ups that vault into the air as targets will amaze you.
This, combined with a fun, twangy, well-crafted soundtrack, creates a terrific game environment the player can enjoy for a few minutes at a time as well as during longer gaming sessions.

Unfortunately, gameplay within Billy Frontier fluctuates between extremely fun and downright frustrating depending on the situation. During shootout levels, the player taps the screen to indicate where they want to fire at aliens the ducking for cover (and occasionally taking potshots at you). As the gunfight continues, players can shoot barrels and crates to reveal extra ammo, health, and money which must shot again in order to be collected.

Sadly, the game’s targeting system feels disjointed and players may find themselves spending half their ammo trying to pick off an alien or, worse, trying to collect more ammo to continue the level and stay alive. (If you run out of bullets, you die).
The duel levels are challenging but entertaining; players must tap symbols to match displayed sequences while showdown-style cinematics and camera angles lend to the environment). The stampede levels make the most of the handset’s built-in technologies. Here, players must try to outrun a herd of kanga-cows while jumping over rocks, fences, and fallen trees along the way. The use of the accelerometer allows players to accurately tilt the unit to steer Billy down the path while collecting coins and chili peppers to act as speed boosts. Stampedes prove to be a refreshing break from the constant gunplay
Even with its flaws, Billy Frontier raises the bar for graphics and sound found on an iPhone game. It may not be perfect, but it’s off to a great start, worth the £5 standard price. (As this review was posted, the App Store lists Billy Frontier and other Pangea Games at 59p —a definite bargain.) Billy Frontier is perhaps just a few updates away from being truly terrific.

Manufacturer: Pangea
Pros: Looks great and has an entertaining soundtrack; fun to play
Cons: Targetting system could use a bit of work
Min specs: iPhone or iPod touch running 2.x software.
Price: £4.99 (UK)
Star rating:*** (3 stars)

New graphics chip for PSP from Apple iPhone company?

Word on the street is that Imagination Technologies Group, licensee of graphics processor cores, has added Sony to its tally of international electronics systems company licensees.
Imagination announced November 24th that it has signed a license agreement with a new partner, a major international consumer electronics company, for a forthcoming member of Imagination's POWERVR SGX graphics processor family.

There were no names and no values ascribed to the licensing but the hint that it is materially insignificant. As a publicly held company Imagination is under pressure to disclose events of material significance via one or more of the many regulatory news services.

According to sources today's announcement by Imagination is for an upgrade to the Sony PSP2 and the SGX core is expected to be the SGX55x.

In its press release Imagination said that it expects that this agreement will extend the reach of its PowerVR architecture into "another high-volume consumer device segment."

Imagination said in September that it had concluded a multi-year, multi-use license agreement with an international electronics systems company. Imagination did not name the company or indicate how much money the deal might be worth. We speculated that deal might be with Apple.

Imagination's PowerVR MBX is already designed into the Apple iPhone (see iPhone code trail points to MBX graphics core, published July 2007). This could indicate that Imagination has followed a line possibly taken by another IP licensor, ARM Holdings plc, and granted a broad IP license to allow Apple to design with its cores.

Turn your Apple iPhone into a games console...

A picture has emerged of what's claimed to be a Belkin clip-on gaming case for the iPhone that, if legit, gives the handset more of a PlayStation Portable look'n'feel.

Actually, it looks rather like the ill-fated Gizmondo gaming handheld. Let's hope this one fares better.

More from The Register here...
