Crysis Warhead next installment on PC this Autumn

The Next Installment of One of the Highest Rated Games of 2007 Blasts its way onto PCs this Autumn

Maximum freedom, maximum explosions and maximum Psycho! Electronic Arts Inc. and award-winning independent studio Crytek today announced Crysis Warhead – the parallel story to Crysis, one of the most critically-acclaimed first person shooters and PC games of 2007. Shipping exclusively for the PC this autumn Crysis Warhead is the first title to be developed at Crytek´s Budapest studio, and is built on a new, enhanced and optimized version of Crytek’s CryENGINE 2 technology.
“We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis.”
“The best result of a partnership that we can ask for in the EA Partners program is when a world class independent studio like Crytek chooses to continue to work with us,” said David DeMartini, Vice President and Global General Manager, EA Partners. “Crysis was an amazing game and is going to be a blockbuster franchise. We could not be more excited to be working with Crytek to launch another hit with Crysis Warhead this year.”
In Crysis Warhead, players will don the Nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, also known as ‘Psycho’, one of the most memorable characters from Crysis. More brash and aggressive than his Delta Force squadmate Nomad, players will experience Psycho’s parallel story during the events of the original game, finding that life on the other side of the island is even more intense and explosive than they ever could have imagined. Luckily, Psycho’s Nanosuit is just as capable and he’s equipped with an even bigger arsenal of fully customizable weapons and new vehicles, giving players access to the tools they need to dominate any situation. Aside from this new, exciting single player campaign, Crysis Warhead will also feature new multiplayer content. Stay tuned for more details this summer.

Top ten games of 2007 - Number Four : Crysis on PC

Crysis was almost a hype-machine unto itself this year, gathering accolades and fanboys even before the first demos and previews were out. The game tells the story of a US soldier fighting aliens and Koreans on a small island with the aid of a nanosuit which enhances his butt-kicking ability.

The first part of a trilogy, Crysis doesn’t sell on the story at all though and, to be honest, that’s a pretty good thing. It forms nothing more than a context for the violence.

What makes Crysis great though is the open design and, of course, the graphics. The bleeding-edge beauty of the game is so intense that even running the game with three top-end graphics cards at once we still couldn’t get perfect performance.

Some view that type of hardware-hogging as a bad point and to some extent they're correct – very few people will be able to play the game as it should be played. However, it does mean that the game is going to scale very well onto future hardware, meaning that Crysis is a game for the future and one that you'll be able to return to time and again in the years to come.

The beautiful graphics are then accentuated by the custom physics engine which lets pretty much everything be demolished. Pick up chickens and throw them around, punch your fists through walls and grab enemies or just vault yourself over tanks and minefields – Crysis is a game that lets players handle each and every battle their own way.

A disappointment to some, who expected the game to revolutionise the industry and were dismayed to find essentially a prettier version of Far Cry, Crysis is a fantastic game in its own right despite the heritage and frequent faltering of individual aspects.

It was an exciting year with lots of ups and downs, but we are more than happy with what we achieved. Even more are we proud of the great community we have, that is supporting us and giving us so much excellent feedback!

Flaws and all, 'Crysis' still a good video game

"Crysis" is a good game.

I have to say this in advance because it's true. It's a very good game. It's hard to stop playing once you start, but what stands out once you're done are the flaws. The game is not perfect and while the good parts may be mostly subtle, the problems are definitely obvious.

The first major problem, oddly enough, is the graphics. Before its release "Crysis" was anticipated for its cutting edge, photo-realistic imagery. And I'm sure it has that ... if you've paid more than $5,000 for your computer in the past couple months. For the rest of us, we'll have to settle for the graphical settings turned down to a mix of medium and high and a lower resolution, which seems like a waste.

However, even on medium, the graphics, while not quite what we were promised, are much better than many other games. Individual leaves and blades of grass are rendered and lit. From a high enough point you can see most of the island on which the game takes place. Everything from the buildings to the trees are destructible and can be used for cover. Wildlife crawls and flies around, and the sun rises and sets. But in order to see all the flora and fauna on my 2.4 GHz Intel Core2 Quad and my Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS, the texture detail has to be turned down and anti-aliasing turned off. It's disappointing since all the promotional screen shots were apparently taken on the very high setting so that's what one expects it to look like.
The story is good by shooter standards, but there's a reason I didn't mention it before the graphics. A few years ago it would be more than you would expect, but in the age of "Bioshock" it feels like a tacked on excuse to shoot people. You're a Special Forces soldier sent to a remote island to rescue an archeology team from North Koreans who accidentally unleash an alien invasion. It does the job but isn't the genre's new high water mark by any means.

Crysis takes the best parts from several different shooters. The recharging health and energy are very reminiscent of Halo's health and shield, but rather than always providing protection the energy also powers your suit's other abilities. These abilities -- speed, strength, armor and cloak, all of which behave just like they sound -- are all very useful depending on the situation so switching them on the fly becomes crucial. The vehicle system isn't just reminiscent of the Battlefield series, it appears to be lifted directly from it. The handling and physics feel almost identical.

This brings us to the second problem. The game tries to be too many things at once. It mixes too many different styles and doesn't do any of them really well. The scarcity of ammo, the cloak and the Far Cry style ability to hide in the bushes suggest it should be a stealth game. At the same time, the sheer quantity of enemies, the annoyingly short life of the cloak and the focus on very noisy vehicles make it resemble a trigger-happy action shooter.

What this results in is an occasionally frustrating experience as you desperately try to sneak away from a dozen enemies because the stealth aspects of the game make it nearly impossible to take them all on. The action aspects of the game make it nearly impossible to get around them.

The reason they're so hard to avoid is because they use remarkable teamwork. They talk to each other intelligently and call for help, going so far as to flank you and lay down suppression fire. (Ironically, while they interact with each other very well, they often fail to notice getting shot in the back when you're using a silencer unless someone else sees it and tells them. The developers must have spent so much time on communication they forgot self-preservation.)

The other gameplay flaw is that the mild puzzle aspects inserted in the otherwise freeform gameplay, either through poor level design or poor planning, turn into desperate scavenger hunts. For example one assignment is to take out two tanks. (I promise that while this may seem like a spoiler now you'll thank me when you get there.) It's impossible to do so with the gear you have, a fact you only figure out after trying. The secret -- and this took me some time -- is to go across town to find a rocket launcher hidden behind a counter. With two tanks and what seems like half the North Korean army after you. That's really not a lot of fun when you don't even know what you're looking for or even that there is something to look for.
The final problem and probably the most severe is that "Crysis" has a midgame identity crisis. The first part is a rare sandbox shooter. You're given a goal and, aforementioned scavenger hunts aside, many methods of handling it. Not just predetermined routes which you can choose from either, for the most part the destructible environments really let you use your creativity to solve problems.

Then, for reasons I still don't understand, it becomes more of a traditional corridor shooter. Just when you're getting used to the freeform, wide open gameplay, it throws you into tunnels and hallways. Then it switches again to what amounts to a long escort mission before finishing with a rail shooter. Why does it give up on the core aspect of its gameplay as soon as the player gets into it in favor of the least popular of all mission types? I couldn't even begin to guess.

For all its flaws, "Crysis" is a good game. It's not the next "Half-Life" or "Halo." but it's well above average for the genre. It's a jack of all trades complete with the traditional lack of mastery. If you have the computer to handle it, there's no reason that you shouldn't pick it up. You'll be impressed by the visuals and satisfied by the first segment of the gameplay, and the freeform aspects mean you'll want to replay it just to see what you can do differently. But if your processor is anything less than dual-core, you're better off passing until affordable hardware catches up.

ABOUT THE GAME:

Crysis is a next-generation PC first-person shooter from Crytek, the award-winning developers of Far Cry. A stunning technical achievement, Crysis combines incredible visuals, cunning gameplay and an epic story that challenges gamers to adapt to survive.

Global tensions have reached boiling point as the U.S. and North Korea square off in the South China Sea. At stake: a mysterious artifact uncovered by a team of U.S. archeologists.

The North Korean government quickly seizes the area, prompting the U.S. to dispatch an elite team of Special Forces operatives on a rescue mission. During the siege the true nature of the artifact quickly emerges, pointing to the existence of an alien presence on Earth, and ultimately the trigger for a massive-scale alien invasion.

The battle to save Earth begins as the aliens’ flash freeze the tropics into a ghostly-white frozen landscape. As gamers take up arms against the aliens, they will be outfitted with customizable weapons and a high-tech Nanosuit, allowing them to adapt their tactics and abilities to a hostile, ever-changing environment and a mysterious enemy.

Powered by CryENGINE 2, Crysis delivers the ultimate DirectX®10 gaming experience for the PC, including unparalleled graphics, special effects and artificial intelligence. The game is also scaleable to deliver a breath-taking FPS experience for older DirectX 9 PCs.

Blow the opposition away with experimental weapons, discover alien technology and utilize custom ammunition from incendiary-tipped rounds to tactical munitions that can silently put foes to sleep.

• Zero-G Gameplay – Battle a horrifying alien species in a true Zero-gravity environment, where physics change everything as players must adapt to moving in Zero-G and contending with the recoil from their weapons and more.

• Next-Generation Graphics – Built from the ground up using Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE™ 2, Crysis’ visuals define “state of the art,” with full DirectX10 support and scalable options to deliver solid performance on older machines.

Nvidia Unleashes GeForce 8800 GT

Gamers wanting an uber cool gaming experience this festive season have now got an affordable option.

Nvidia has launched the GeForce 8800 GT, the latest addition to its GeForce 8 Series of graphics processing units (GPUs)

GeForce 8800 GT offers a hyper-reactive, intensely robust gaming experience for the latest, next generation DirectX 10 games, such as Crysis, Hellgate: London, and Gears of War, as well as full support for current DirectX 9 games, according to Nvidia.

When the GeForce 8 Series was first introduced, gamers demanded a product with 64 stream processors and 256-bit memory interface to deliver more performance at an affordable price.

Nvidia has now responded to the demand with its GeForce 8800 GT featuring 112 stream processors, fast 256-bit memory interface, and second-generation PureVideo HD technology.

In addition to 112 stream processors, each individually clocked at 1.5GHz, plus a 256-bit memory interface running at 900MHz, the GeForce 8800 GT is designed for the new PCI Express 2.0 bus standard, and is backwards-compatible with the original PCI Express standard.

Nvidia claims the GeForce 8800GT combines the best in gaming with the best in HD. It features a second-generation video processing engine to deliver high-quality playback of HD DVD and Blu-ray movies on PCs.

According to the company, the new programmable video processing engine takes on all of the high definition H.264 video decoding, freeing the CPU to perform other tasks, as also reduces power consumption, heat, and noise.

The Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT is available for Rs 14,900 plus taxes.
