Dark Knight pushes PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray sales but PS3 lags behing Xbox and Wii

batman joker heath ledger
Blu-Ray may have won the High Definition Video format war but it hasn't been a sweet victory as sales have been disappointing could Batman save the day?

With Xbox 360 (15.5 million) still outselling Sony's PlaySation 3 (9 million) and both lagging behind Nintendo's Wii (20 million) console will The Dark Knight, Batman film push Sony sales?

In November more than 462,500 Blu-Ray discs were sold that's 165% jump from October but sales of PS3s to play Blu-Ray disappoint.

Consumer Blu-Ray players have been heavily discounted to try and boost demand.

The PlayStation 3 was meant to be the entry into Blu-Ray HD players but this hasn't happened. I cannot understand why as our PS3 is used to play Hd content with jaw dropping effect.

So let's hope that Batman has saved more than Gotham City - with the recession on the horizon let's hope it's a great 2009.

Top 10 iPhone & iPod Touch games for 2008

Load of you would get and iPhone or iPod touch for Christmas and loads more already have one.

Here's a list of top games you might want to consider - some of the best are free...

Aurora Feint: The Beginning
(Free) - Amongst the first games in the App Store, this may have been an eye opener for many iPhone gamers. The game offers a polished match-3 (Bejeweled-like) puzzler in the setting of a role playing game. Progressive accomplishments in the puzzle portion of the game provides you with resources to level up and gain increasing skills.

Review plus video on TouchArcade here...

Dropship ($0.99) - We confidently declared this to be the best shooter in the App Store. Excellent and innovative controls with well balanced gameplay made this one of our most enjoyed games. This is how an iPhone game should play and at $0.99, it’s a no brainer.

Wurdle ($1.99) - Curiously, we’ve never covered this game here on TouchArcade. This word game is a variant of Boggle in which you try to find as many words on a tiled board. This is app-store crack for a good segment of the iPhone gameplaying population. The simplicity of its design with easy to use touch screen controls make it one of the best.

PapiJump
(Free) - A ridiculously simple game that will have you frustrated and addicted. Sunflat’s Papi games have received a bit of a cult following due to their insultingly simple graphics but compelling gameplay. PapiJump, however, remains Sunflat’s best.

Trism ($2.99) - Also one of the early titles available for the iPhone, this is another Match-3 color game but reinvented for the iPhone. It uses triangles (trisms) and tilt controls to influence the direction that the tiles will fall. Surprisingly, the design really worked and resulted in one of the first (and best) iPhone-specific puzzle games.

Fastlane Street Racing ($3.99) - There’s no shortage of racers for the iPhone, but this one stood out to us as one of the best racing games for the platform. The game had its detractors, however, due to the high starting difficulty of the game. Fortunately, the developers have just released a v1.1 update which introduces an “easy” mode

Toy Bot Diaries ($3.99) - Toy Bot was another standout title, not just because of the enjoyable gameplay as a physics platformer, but also the fact that this was one of the first true iPhone games with game design and controls invented specifically for the platform. The right control system really lets you immerse yourself into a game.

Fieldrunners
($4.99) - Tower Defense. Heard of it? If you haven’t, this is the game for you. Even if you have, this is probably the game for you. Named one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 video games of the year, we at TouchArcade feel the title is well deserved. This game has significant cross-over appeal that has introduced countless iPhone users to the genre of Tower Defense (TD). Despite the proliferation of TD games in the App Store, many still consider this one the best.

Galcon ($4.99) - The perfect pick-up strategy game? A fast paced arcade strategy game in which you must dominate all the planets. Wonderfully suited for the iPhone with short gaming sessions lasting a few minutes each. Online multi-player really takes this game to the next level.

Real Soccer 2009
($5.99) - For soccer fans, this is the game to get. Sports gaming on the iPhone hasn’t seen much that can compare to the massive titles available for traditional consoles, but this game comes closest

Hero of Sparta ($9.99) - This overall package is one of the most impressive games for the iPhone. As a “Hack n’ Slasher”, you fight your way through hordes of enemies in a 3D environment. For those who have wanted a “console-like” experience in the iPhone, this is the closest yet

Rolando
($9.99) - Rolando was one of the most anticipated iPhone games of the year. Even though Ngmoco is a sponsor of this site, I still feel confident that I can unbiasedly say that the game delivered on much of the hype. The game offers an iPhone-specific platformer that incorporates the iPhone’s touch screen and accelerometer into a wonderfully produced game

PC games of 2009 - Mirror's Edge, Commander in Chief, EndWar, Prototype, X-Men, Dark Void, Harry Potter, Madden NFL, Section 8, Saw, QuakeCon...

mirror's edge

Mirror's Edge is coming out for PC January 6 of 2009. The very capacity to be allowed the freedom to control the character as the player would his or her own body proves to surpass any video game before it. In this way, players aren't merely punching buttons to manipulate what they see before them, players are utilizing the controls as a medium through which they can watch their chosen actions performed by a character on-screen. In Mirror's Edge, the character is the player. Having already been released for the XBox 360 and PS3 on November 11, the game's hype has become realized. Soon, the computer nerds of the US will be granted the privilege to pick apart Mirror's Edge for PC. The time will come on January 6, 2009.

February: Exclusively for PC, Commander in Chief comes out on February 20, 2009. For what seems like the first time in gaming history, Commander in Chief allows for the player to choose an existing country to manage in a real-time simulation.

March: Tom Clancy's EndWar will be released March 2, 2009. This game looks like an extremely intricate improvement upon old school Battleship; which is fascinating in my book.

April: On April 1, 2009 Prototype is scheduled to be let loose upon the US. Set in current-day New York, the game puts the player in the role of comic-book-style antihero Alex Mercer, an ordinary guy who wakes up one day and finds himself completely at a loss for memory

May: The only game officially set to be released this month is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. VideoGamer.com basically describes X-Men Origins as a sort-of interactive follow-up of the original movie's trilogy.

June: Solely due to the fact that this game is brought to you by Capcom, the adventures of Dark Void should be nothing short of mind-blowing. With such titles as Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, etc under their belt, one can only see the promise of greatness in Capcom's future.

July: For the kiddies interested in losing themselves in some hardcore J.K. Rowling adventures, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince just may be your cup of tea.

August: In August, Madden NFL 2010 will be available for all who own some sort of console or handheld gaming device.

September: TimeGate is liberating its developmental hold on FPS Section 8 on September 30. After the resolution of a lawsuit pinned upon TimeGate by ABC Studios earlier this year, the game has been issued a sure-fire release date for September of next.

October: Brash Entertainment is saving the release of a Saw game for next October.

November: After next Fall's scheduled QuakeCon event to be hosted in Dallas, Texas, a consumer electronics show by the name of Li-Fi will be held at the Dalls Convention Center November 20-22, 2009.

December: Now, is it golden oldie Starcraft II or spankin' new Bioshock 2 that have gamers, all across the globe, salivating at the bit for a chance to reserve that one special game title in December?

Sexy new Velvet Assassin, Violette Summer's outfits - Nighty, Leather, Uniform in High Resolution...

velvet assassin
From day one the developers at Replay Studios knew they didn’t want to simply sensationalize one of the most tragic wars in human history, but to give gamers one of the first true-to-life experiences. An integral part of that mission was to provide players with an intriguing view of the war by portraying a strong, yet normal woman, not only in physique - but also in the reality of her abilities. Violette is a woman who has lost everything dear to her and now has but one goal – to disrupt and destroy the Nazi regime. Completely alone behind enemy lines, Violette has to do whatever it takes to complete her missions with what she has on hand. Everything Violette has must have a meaning and a use, including her clothing. Depending on the mission, Violette has a few sets of clothing that she can use to her advantage.

Below we give three examples of some of the outfits available in Velvet Assassin

Sexy new Velvet Assassin, Violette Summer's outfitsClick image for Large version
Pilot Outfit - Violette’s mainstay is her standard brown leather jacket and blue canvas cargo pant set. While not exactly all the rage in Milan, this is a very likely outfit of the times; providing the wearer with the storage of cargo pockets, durability of canvas and toughness of the leather. This outfit gives Violette a solid set of threads to get by with. There isn’t too much to be said for these duds, but they get the job done.
Sexy new Velvet Assassin, Violette Summer's outfitsClick image for Large version
Leather Sneaking Suit - The all-leather suit gives Violette a slight edge in darkness. For obvious reasons she’s able to blend in with the shadows much better in this suit. Made of supple leather, this is the ideal outfit for Violette, with the tough, yet soft feel of the leather offering her great flexibility in both combat and stealth.

Sexy new Velvet Assassin, Violette Summer's outfitsClick image for Large version

Nazi Officer Uniform – As the old saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Isn’t it funny how they never seem to find the things right under their noses? With one quick wardrobe change, Violette takes on the Nazi Officer uniform and can easily infiltrate enemy ranks. The minute Violette dons the uniform, she takes on the persona of a Nazi officer, walking and saluting to keep the other soldiers completely fooled. As long as Violette doesn’t have any close face-to-face encounters and doesn’t behave suspiciously, she should be able to fool any soldiers she comes upon.

Sexy new Velvet Assassin, Violette Summer's outfitsClick image for Large version

Night Dress – This outfit is completely unsuited to any of the exploits that Violette will undertake, but that’s the point. The entirety of Velvet Assassin is actually a flashback, with Violette remembering her efforts while in a coma. Whenever players get into a tight spot in the game, they can go into Morphine Mode which simulates Violette getting an injection of the drug from her nurse to calm her down as she lives out the horrific memories of war in her violent dreams. When this happens, the action slows down and the world around her becomes more of a dreamscape, and whatever Violette was wearing is temporarily exchanged with the nightie she’s garbed in at the hospital.
