Chernobyl VR Project is a very special project by The Farm 51, a software developer from Gliwice, as it combines video games with educational software.
It is the very first virtual tour around the Chernobyl and Pripyat area, compatible with multiple VR headsets, such as Oculus, Morpheus, Vive, or the mobile Samsung Gear VR solution. The Farm 51 has already visited the site, preparing the project and collecting visual content.

We aim to release the application close to the disaster’s 30th anniversary (April 2016). Chernobyl VR Project Reality 51 is The Farm 51’s in-house technology, fully adapted to the emerging Virtual Reality market. Chernobyl VR Project uses this technology and state-of-the-art graphics solutions, such as advanced 3D scans, spherical photography, stereoscopic videos and augmented reality.
Everything is fully adapted to state-of-the-art VR headsets, such as Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, Oculus or Sony Morpheus.
The chernobyl disaster
On April 26, 1986, the nuclear reactor in power unit #4 overheated, leading to an explosion of hydrogen, spreading fire and radioactive substances all around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant site.This is how the largest human-caused industrial and environmental disaster ever began.
A vast stretch of land around the power plant was polluted, including areas in Belarus, the Ukraine, and Russia. The resulting radioactive cloud also traveled to other European countries. Just after the disaster, Polish authorities stopped giving milk to kids at schools and pre-schools, fearing that it might be contaminated. Until this day, the scientists have been unable to determine all of the consequences of the explosion.
As a result of the disaster, ca. 350 thousand people were relocated from the area of Chernobyl and the city of Pripyat. They had to abandon their houses and workplaces in a matter of hours. Many people died due to diseases associated with radiation poisoning.
