No wonder, given that Stephen Perlman's vision to revolutionise the way games are distributed and played has been talked up as threatening the future of the console and of retail stores.

OnLive, which was launched in the middle of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to much excitement, buzz - and scepticism - aims to provide high quality gaming on low-end machines.

Super Smash Bros. running in High Resolution on Wii Emultaor - video

Super Smash Bros. Brawl running on the PC using Dolphin revision 2671.

System used:
+ E8400 @ 4GHz
+ 4GB Ballistix DDR2 RAM
+ XFX GTX 260 216 Black Edition

This video demonstrates just how well this game can be emulated with a decent CPU & GPU (not to demonstrate game play) as most of the videos on YouTube are low quality cam / cell footage.

Who knew Wii games could look so good once 16xAA / 16xQ CSAA is applied? Using Dolphin to emulate this 1-year old title is like playing a whole new game. Thank you Dolphin team, for making this possible!

Konami offers free downloadable version of Umbro’s innovative new England strip to users of PES 2009

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH is to offer an exclusive, free downloadable version of the new Umbro England strip to users of its PES 2009 title for PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360 and PC-DVD.

PES 2009 is the official video game of the England team, and the free download highlights the close relationship between the two. Umbro will unveil the innovative new kit on March 28, when England take on Slovakia at Wembley.

Fabio Capello’s team will wear the strip for the first time for the international match and while details of the strip are currently being kept under wraps it has been designed to a strict specification from the England manager to provide a bespoke tailored fit for each player.

Konami’s download will be available at the same time as the Slovakia game’s 5:15pm kick-off, and PES 2009 will be the only video game to feature the new kit. Similarly, Konami will be working closely with Umbro and The FA in a series of activities designed to promote the new strip and download.

PES 2009 is the most recent installment of the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, which is known by millions of fans for its superior gameplay and incredible realism. In PES 2009, Konami has created an intuitive and utterly realistic simulation that truly recreates all the pace and skill of a top-level match. Stunning visuals and animation ensure its players look and move exactly like their real-life counterparts, while all-new options allow users to tailor the game to their own tastes. New moves, innovative new control elements and key online modes add to the realism of the game.

“Konami is extremely proud of its status as the official video game of the England team, and this download showcases the strength of our relationship with The FA and Umbro,” commented Jon Murphy, PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “Our Japanese team has been working closely with both parties to ensure the innovative new kit is faithfully recreated in the game, and we are delighted to be able to offer it as a free download to our millions of fans on the day it is revealed for the first time.”

“The FA is delighted to be working with Konami and Umbro to deliver fans of the England team the new strip in an inventive manner,” said Sean McAuliffe, Head of Business Development at The FA. “This further demonstrates our ability to leverage our commercial relationships in creative and engaging ways.”

“We are extremely excited to be working with Konami on this project and being the first to launch a new kit download during the season in PES 2009,” added Tim Parkinson, Umbro Chief Marketing Officer. “Umbro has a rich heritage in football and innovation has always been at the heart of the brand. The exclusive download with Konami is just another innovative step for Umbro. This and the ongoing relationship with Konami presented an opportunity to do something radically different around the launch of the kit.”

PES 2009 is available now for PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360 and PC-DVD. The England kit update will be free to download on March 28th from 4:15pm.

Bungie commit to two more years of Halo - Halo ODST to be last game

halo bungie split news
As reported by Eurogamer, they say they had ‘no further plans for more Halo 3 content beyond ODST’, although they would continue to support the online Halo 3 experience with minor updates such as Matchmaking playlists and moderate servers as required.

Bungie stated: “We’ll never say never, but currently Bungie has no plans to make new Halo 3 content beyond the release of ODST.

With Forge and the Mythic map Sandbox we’re already seeing the community stepping up to create some great new maps and gametypes that will offer more variety and longevity to the game down the road.”

So, looks like the Halo franchise will have to move on without the mighty Bungie by their side.

At the annual Game Developers Conference Microsoft announced new features coming to the Games for Windows – LIVE online gaming service and community:

· Anti-piracy Solution: Zero-day piracy protection and server-side authentication help prevent game piracy before street date, and protect publishers and consumers by requiring authentication for online play

· In-game Marketplace: New Marketplace APIs let developers create unique in-game store fronts and experiences surrounding the sale of additional content, providing developers and publishers with new revenue streams, and consumers with a seamless gaming experience

· Roaming: PC gamers can now save their personal settings back to their Games for Windows – LIVE account in the cloud, providing access to their settings on any compatible and connected Windows PC

“This update and other features currently in development represent a tipping point in the evolution of Games for Windows – LIVE as a leading online PC gaming network,” said Ron Pessner, general manager of Games for Windows – LIVE. “In the coming months, we will continue to deliver on our promise to provide gamers and publishers with the industry’s best connected gaming experiences through the LIVE service.”

In the last six months, the Games for Windows – LIVE community has seen staggering growth thanks in part to the launch of a more PC-friendly interface last November, and the addition of some of the year’s biggest and best Windows games, including #1 best-sellers “Grand Theft Auto IV,” “Fallout 3” and “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II.”

“As a publisher, no one is more excited to see the continued growth and evolution of Games for Windows – LIVE than Microsoft Game Studios,” said Dave Luehmann, general manager of Window games for Microsoft Game Studios. “We have several projects underway which will incorporate the LIVE service, and we’re continuing to build new developer relationships here at GDC to bring the best in the industry to Games for Windows – LIVE.”

Microsoft announce Dream-Build-Play global game development competition

xbox dream build playThe Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft announced the third annual Dream-Build-Play global game development competition that encourages aspiring and hobbyist developers to create new and innovative games for Xbox 360.

Beginning Monday, April 6 developers from all over the world will have an opportunity to submit their unique game creations to the Dream-Build-Play 2009 competition for a chance to win a cash prize and an opportunity to sign an Xbox LIVE Arcade publishing contract.

Winners will be announced this fall. Last year, more than 10,000 members of the community enrolled in Dream-Build-Play, yielding more than 350 completed games from all over the world developed using Microsoft’s free XNA Game Studio tools.

Several of last year’s winners, including Team GAMBIT for “CarneyVale: Showtime” and Mommy’s Best Games for “Weapon of Choice,” collectively took home more than $70,000 in prizes and have since become top sellers on the Xbox LIVE Community Games Channel. Winners from 2007, “The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai,” “Blazing Birds” and “YoHo Kablammo!” from the United States, Canada and UK respectively, are all slated for release on Xbox LIVE Arcade in the coming months.

Microsoft also announced new updates to its free XNA Game Studio development tools, available to professional and hobbyist developers this spring, which will allow developers at any level to take advantage of new partner additions and Xbox LIVE features. Both Xbox LIVE Arcade and Community Games developers will be able to include customized Avatars, which have quickly become one of the most popular features on Xbox LIVE, and LIVE Party functionality, which makes playing games a social experience by letting gamers seamlessly play and chat with their friends online. Professional Xbox LIVE Arcade developers will be able to release game add-ons like episodic content.

“The level of innovation and the number of submissions we receive each year to Dream-Build-Play has increased exponentially because the development community is becoming increasingly familiar with the XNA Game Studio,” XNA General Manager Boyd Multerer said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what developers are able to create with the latest LIVE features and updated tools at their disposal.”

The XNA Game Studio update, which will also include improvements like video playback and new audio APIs, means that more games featuring Avatars and LIVE Party could start appearing on Xbox LIVE as early as this fall.

Additionally, Microsoft reinforced its commitment to professional developers with the preview of new Xbox 360 Development and Test Kit hardware. This hardware includes additional debugging memory that allows developers to more efficiently produce games, push the console to its maximum capabilities, and ensure the best titles continue to be created for Xbox 360.

More detailed information about XNA can be found by visiting http://creators.xna.com. For additional information about Dream-Build-Play, visit www.dreambuildplay.com. For additional information about previous Dream-Build-Play winners, visit www.Xbox.com.
