Free DLC Now Available for Unreal Tournament III

Midway and Epic Games have announced that three new maps are now available for download for Unreal Tournament III on the PS3 and PC. As icing on the cake, it turns out this new content is 100% free for both versions of the game (take that microtransactions). PC users can download the maps by clicking the link below, while PS3 users can find them on the Playstation Network. The three maps include Morbias, Facing Worlds, and Searchlight:

Morbias is the deathmatch arena that started it all, perfectly suited for anything from small intense duels to chaotic free-for-all matches. The Unreal Tournament classic, Facing Worlds was one of the most played maps in gaming history. This beloved sniper map makes its return alongside an intricate new capture the flag map, Searchlight, designed for both z-axis rooftop runs and strategic indoor gameplay.

Maybe this will convince more people to jump on this woefully underappreciated game.

Top ten games of 2007 - Number Eight : Unreal Tournament 3 on PC

Towards the end of this year, gamers were spoiled for choice when it came to multiplayer-centric first-person shooters and many of the big names found themselves directly competing. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament 3 all ended up going head to head.

When the dust cleared, Quake Wars was left dead and bleeding, while UT3 managed to walk calmly out, secure in the knowledge that its delicate balance of complex mechanics and streamlined game design made it the most superior multiplayer shooter on the market.

If Halo 3 was the multiplayer game of the year for consoles, then Unreal Tournament 3 was its grossly superior, PC-orientated older brother. Gorgeous to look at and with a nice simple selection of mutators and modes, this was Unreal Tournament taken back to basics in many ways. There's only a handful of different game types in the vanilla install, but this is compensated for in the superior map design which manages to spew buckets of complexity into even the simplest CTF level.

Every time Epic had scaled back though it had also added on so that, while there is an initially simple set of available game types, it’s complemented by a huge array of vehicles and as good a singleplayer campaign as you’ll ever find in a game like this.

The strength of UT3 lies in two places – the longevity and alterability of the Unreal Engine 3, and the passion of the team behind it. We had a chance to chat to Mark Rein at the UT3 launch and his passion for the game was almost tangible at points.

The whole team at Epic has worked to create an engine which is not only used by several games in this list, but which continues to fully support the mod community – securing Unreal Tournament 3 a solid future for years to come.

Epic Releases First User-Created Content for Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3!

Epic's Mark Rein sends word that they have released the first user-created content for the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3.

Epic Games is proud to take the first bold step in a new era! Today we're releasing the very first user-created content for Unreal Tournament 3 on PlayStation 3.

We're starting with a user-created map called DM-Shrine created by Thomas Browett, who goes by the name Setheran on the official UT3 forums. Thomas is a 23 year old graphic designer from Nottingham, England. He's been playing Unreal since the very first Unreal Tournament and he says he's enjoyed every game in the series. He made a few maps for the original Unreal Tournament but hadn't done anything since this one. He finds the third generation Unreal Editor to be very friendly and feature rich.

DM-Shrine is is a great little map that's perfect those close-quarters, 2-6 player, matches that keep your adrenaline pumping from beginning to end. A lot of our DM maps in UT3 are designed for larger player counts so this provides a great contrast and a chance to play in a more intimate setting. I've always loved these types of maps and I hope you folks do as well!

Here is how to install UT3 mods on your PlayStation 3.

1. Unzip the file to the root directory of any memory card that is readable by your PlayStation 3. It is already in the proper directory structure but, just in case, the path and filename need to be: ps3\savedata\blus30086-modimport\userdata.jam

2. Boot up Unreal Tournament 3 on your PS3

3. Go to the "Community" menu

4. Choose "My Content"

5. Press the [SQUARE] button to "Import Mod"

6. Follow the directions on the screen to import it from your memory card.

Once imported you'll be able to see the map in your list of Deathmatch maps. You'll be able to host the map and join servers that are hosting the map. All UT3 mods install this same way. If this were a mutator it would show up in the mutator list. If it were a gametype it would show up in gametype lists, etc.

This is just the first little taste of modding on Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3.

Epic didn't make this map. Thomas did and he already released it for PC users of UT3. We didn't do any editing or changes to it. All we did was bring it into the editor and "cook" it into the proper format for the PlayStation 3 and tested it to make sure it ran properly and was good fun. We're waiting on some paperwork from Sony that will allow us to release an editor update so mod creators can do this cook process for themselves. We expect to have that very soon.

Tomorrow we're planning to release some more user-created content: a mutator, a couple more maps, and a new game type!

We have some really cool things of our own in the works (for both PC and PS3 versions of UT3) here at Epic but those are still in development so they're a little further down the road.

Illuminate Labs Joins Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 Integrated Partners

World’s leading game engine to offer unrivaled lighting solutions

Illuminate Labs, creators of rendering and lighting technology for next-generation games, and Epic Games, Inc. today announced a licensing agreement to incorporate Illuminate Labs' global illumination system, Beast, into Epic's Unreal Engine 3 (UE3), the industry's most popular game engine. Under the terms of the agreement, Illuminate Labs will join Epic's prestigious Integrated Partners Program (IPP), and its technology will be immediately available to any publishers or developers that license UE3.

By incorporating Illuminate Labs’ Beast lighting solution into UE3, the two companies have enabled artists to seamlessly add global illumination to development environments using the renowned Unreal Editor. Beast is also a fully platform-independent baker that utilizes the open-standard FBX file format, which allows users to easily add extremely complex baking functionality to 3D asset creation tools. UE3 licensees can instantly start taking advantage of Beast’s features that are new to the engine, which include:

• Global Illumination baking
• Skylights from HDR images
• Baked soft shadows with transparency

Future feature sets developed by Illuminate Labs will be incorporated into UE3 per the partnership.

“We are very proud to be part of Epic’s Integrated Partners Program,” said Magnus Wennerholm, chief executive officer of Illuminate Labs. “Visual quality and cost effectiveness in the production process are key issues to all games studios, and with this partnership UE3 customers will benefit from easy access to our advanced lighting technology.”

“We are very pleased to give our licensees access to one of the most advanced lighting technologies available through this partnership,” said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games. “Integrating Beast into UE3 will help our licensees more easily create games utilizing best-of-breed global illumination techniques. We welcome Illuminate Labs into the partners program and look forward to empowering more developers through this relationship.”

Epic Games' Integrated Partners Program (IPP) establishes a formal business relationship with exceptional companies making cross-platform technologies which integrate with, and are complementary to, UE3. Under the IPP, Epic provides continuous UE3 source code access and full technical support to IPP members. Companies who join the IPP agree to provide a high level of technical support for UE3 licensees through Epic's established support channels, keep their implementations up-to-date with the latest engine versions and collaborate with Epic on potential promotional and co-marketing efforts.

Developers utilizing the UE3 and Beast technology integration include Gearbox Software, creators of the celebrated Brothers in Arms franchise, the upcoming first-person shooter based on the Aliens motion picture and Borderlands for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“Gearbox Software likes to stay on the cutting edge of video game technology,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. “Gearbox licensed new technology from Illuminate Labs for several of its upcoming games. This new arrangement with Illuminate Labs and Epic Games will ensure that the technology is supported at the source and will help Gearbox Software continue to make the most technologically advanced and graphically impressive video games as a licensee of Unreal Engine 3.”

Playstation 3 (PS3) Unreal Tournament 3 can't use PC mods, maps at launch

The PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 has been the talk of the town for being one of the first ever console games to feature modding. Though you'll need the PC version to make use of the editor for maps, models, and so forth, having access to player-created content is still a huge feature. We've been testing these functions out, but have learned that the PS3 version—which hit stores across North America today—cannot accept mods yet. Epic Games team member Josh Adams has explained the problem on the official forums:

However, the PS3 mod tools aren't quite ready yet. We are working through some final legal/release issues.

When it's ready, you will need to download the latest PC patch and another PS3 Mod Tools "patch" that adds the full PS3 mod support to the PC version.

You will have to cook ypur mods for the PS3 specifically. You will also need removable media (memory card, USB drive, etc) to transfer the mod from your PC to your PS3.
Our tests show that the Unreal Engine 3 Editor has no way of exporting content specifically for the PS3 yet. There is also no utility to package the various .ini, .ut3, and .u files necessary for other mods into a format that can be extracted and installed by the game's import content function. Though the instruction manual contains some basic instructions, even the printed reference page is currently unavailable. This may be a downer for some who were looking to get mods going right from the start.

our betas later, the Unreal Tournament III patch is ready for primetime! Including well over a hundred changes, the patch does a lot to address the complaints about the game's user interface, and though not required to play on patched servers, it is well worth downloading despite its hefty 240MB filesize.

Unreal Tournament 3 £50,000 competition

Following last week’s announcement that Enemydown, Midway and PLAY.com are to hold a massive £50,000 cash tournament to celebrate the launch of the eagerly awaited Unreal Tournament 3 on PC DVD from Epic Games, Xleague.tv today announced that it will broadcast exclusive TV coverage of the tournament leading up to the final event.

Only gamers pre-ordering and purchasing Unreal Tournament 3 from PLAY.com before its scheduled launch in November and post launch through December will receive a unique registration code allowing them to enter two massive competitions with their new game. One is a single player tournament with a fantastic first prize of £20,000, and the other is a team-based tournament with an even bigger prize of £30,000.

Xleague.tv will exclusively televise select matches from the online competitions, which will take place following the launch of the game. The finalists will then be invited to the grand-slam shoot out in March 2008 at the recently announced ‘Play.com Live’ show to be held at Wembley Stadium.

Today’s announcement further solidifies the growing relationship between Xleague.tv and Enemydown/TNWA Group, having already had a successful collaboration in the form of the Packard Bell EU open ‘Play Harder’ tournaments.

Ray Mia, Channel Head – Xleague.tv, said: “XLeague.tv is continually striving to give the UK gaming community the very best coverage of the best gaming events. I'm excited to announce our exclusive coverage of the Enemydown Unreal Tournament 3 £50,000 competition, in conjunction with PLAY.com and Midway Games Ltd.

Since our Channel launched in May 2007, we have employed a great deal of broadcast know-how into producing gaming shows that would excite the knowledgeable gamer, as well as providing compelling television to the uninitiated. We are the first broadcaster to effectively manage and create programming for multi-player games, and with the increasing success of our Gears of War and Halo 3 shows, UT3 looks set to become an important part of our gaming line-up and broadcast schedule for 2008.

I am particularly enthusiastic and encouraged by the increasing association between XLeague.tv and Enemydown. It makes perfect sense that one of the leading online gaming outfits in the UK partner with the leading games broadcaster. After we successfully co-launched three PC Leagues sponsored by Packard Bell, the UT3 £50,000 competition is excellent news for the gaming community, and now they can fight it out on TV. It's an exciting time for UK gaming, and we're proud to be part of it.”

“Having Xleague.tv onboard for this competition will add yet another appealing facet for everyone purchasing Unreal Tournament 3 from PLAY.com,” added Paul Sulyok, CEO of The TNWA Group. “They have demonstrated a perfect affinity with a broad gaming audience and transposed this into a show format that conveys the non-stop action a game like UT3 provides. This tournament will be essential viewing!”

Enemydown hosts the largest UK community of online PC gamers. The site has hosted some of the largest online gaming tournaments in recent years, attracting both amateur and professional clans. The site is widely regarded as a premier destination for Europe's competitive PC gamer teams.
