Ed Key and David Kanaga’s award winning audio-visual exploration game is out this month on PlayStation formats, featuring islands generated by date and location.
Proteus is a game about exploration and immersion in a dream-like island world where the soundtrack to your play is created by your surroundings. Played in first-person, the primary means of interaction is simply your presence in the world and how you observe it. The procedurally generated islands are home to creatures natural and imagined, tranquil valleys and ruins with magical properties.
This month PlayStation fans will be able to get their hands on the enhanced version of the PC exploration game, Proteus. Released on PC in 2013 by Ed Key and David Kanaga, Proteus is a game all about discovery where players wonder a randomly generated, dreamlike island world, where the soundtrack is determined by the objects you discover while exploring.
Curve Studios has been working closely with designer Ed Key to bring the PlayStation port to life, including adding new features unique to the PS3 and Vita versions.
On the Vita version of the game, Proteus can generate an island based on your geographical location, and on the PlayStation 3, you can generate islands based on the current date.
Islands generated in this fashion will be the same for anyone in the same location or on the same day, and will also be more ‘wild’ than regular islands in the game, featuring various twists on the original’s islands and shifting, surreal colour palettes.
Players can also use the back-touch screen to gently affect the world around them, changing the island in subtle ways and remixing the colours of the world.
