Cyberpunk 2077: Pen-and-paper inspirations, making-of materials, braindance details and more

A week ago CD Projekt RED released the first official teaser trailer for their upcoming open-world, story-driven RPG Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s already been seen over 6 million times. The clip’s premiere was accompanied by a series of insightful materials, revealing even more details about the game setting. You can find the compilation of the most important ones here.

“Cyberpunk isn’t about saving humanity, it’s about saving yourself,” says Mike Pondsmith, in the video titled “Cyberpunk 2077 - Mike Pondsmith about Cyberpunk World”. The video explains his inspirations for creating the pen-and-paper RPG Cyberpunk system, which is the main foundation of CD Projekt RED’s video game.

“Working with Mike Pondsmith is a great experience for the studio. Many of the people behind Cyberpunk 2077 have played his game, and having his support is very important for us. It’s good to know what inspired him and what influenced his vision of the world. Our experience in video game storytelling and the technology , capable of building open-world games, combined with Mike’s vision will result in one of the most kick-ass futuristic RPGs, ” said Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED studio.

Did you know that the woman in the teaser trailer is a real-life model? You can see her in the additional “behind the scenes” materials, published by the co-creators of the clip, Platige Image. You can check out early concept sketches, the 3D scanning of real-life models and how the final result was achieved.

The creators of the game have released some new information about the world of 2077, which may play an important part in the game’s storyline. In the second half of the 21st century, a new form of entertainment is on everybody’s lips. Braindances are digital recordings of one person’s experience, packaged for sale to others.

CD Projekt RED also launched Afterlife - the official forum of the game. Many users have already contributed, sharing their thoughts on the setting and the genre. All these opinions, along with thousands of comments about the trailer, are important community feedback for the team. They consider all opinions, and aim to create a world that will be a great journey for fans of the pen-and-paper system, the cyberpunk genre, RPG enthusiasts and all newcomers.

Many gaming fans noticed the hidden message in one frame of the teaser trailer.
“As you may know, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the only title we are working on. Those of you who watched the teaser trailer carefully know that something big is coming on the 5th of February. Everything will be clearer on that day. Right now I can only say that, for the first time in the history of our studio, it will be a fully open-world game (just like Cyberpunk will be). We also remember our games’ trademark engrossing and non-linear storytelling. In the studio, the strong bond of these two elements - an open world and a captivating tale - is what everyone is trying to achieve. Both Cyberpunk 2077 and the second game draw upon these two pillars to bring our vision of a perfect RPG to life,” comments Badowski
