This is the second time that Atari has entered a legal battle over the Dungeons & Dragons brand. In August, developer Turbine sued the publisher for "under-prompting" its MMO based on the property as part of a licensing termination strategy.
Toy firm Hasbro has filed a lawsuit against long-term partner Atari over the game rights to Dungeons & Dragons.
The manufacturer has alleged that the studio has entered an unauthorised sublicensing agreement with Namco Bandai. Both firms were working towards an out-of-court settlement in the months prior to the complaint.
Hasbro considers Namco Bandai a competitor due to its production of toys and collectibles for a number of its properties, including Naruto and Dragon Ball. A sublicensing agreement with a rival firm is prohibited under the terms of its contract with Atari.
Atari refuted the claims, calling them "meritless" and "an apparent attempt to unfairly take back rights granted to Atari".
The publisher added: "Atari has sought to resolve the matter without co-operation from Hasbro. We regret that our long-time partner has decided to pursue this action. Atari will respond appropriately through its legal counsel in court."
