Dark Fall: Lost Souls final developer diary released

The old Station Cafe has new diners. They stare into nothingness, waiting forever. Note to gamer: Don't eat the food.In anticipation of this week’s UK retail release of Dark Fall: Lost Souls, Jonathan Boakes, developer of the highly anticipated horror adventure, presents his second developer diary entry.

As development was wrapped up, this is also the final diary about Lost Souls, but at least it’s very long, as Jonathan gets entangled in a three-way celebratory, 10 page conversation between him, Matt Clark and Philip Philippou. Aside from interesting facts about Boakes’ game developing in past, present and future, the diary contains many beautiful illustrations and inside information on what independent game development is all about.

A few quotes taken from Jonathan Boakes:

* It’s weird, actually, to go back to a location I’ve built in the past. The rooms and outdoor places in the first Dark Fall look very basic, in comparison to this new game. I guess I’ve learnt a bit more, over 10 years! So bring some new skills and tools to the place.

* I knew when I started to build the game that it would need a higher rating. I was nervous of 18, or Mature, as I know lots of gamers play my games with their kids. So, I feel a bit guilty. But, the story comes first, and I believe most of the nasty stuff is suggested, rather than over stated. The game is about a missing child, Amy Haven, and the Police Inspector who investigated the case. Also, the fact that the investigation was plagued by mistakes and press intrusion seems quite adult. I don’t paint the police as heroes. Now, that seems like a topical subject to me.

The entire conversation is hosted by Just Adventure and can be found here.

About Dark Fall: Lost Souls

The dead are waiting. They have stories to tell. Tales of darkness, loneliness and despair. Be careful you do not join them, as it could be an eternity until the next curious visitor opens that old, rotten door, to find you within. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. What tale would you tell? Would you know how to explain what happened, that dark night when your curiosity got the better of you? Would you be able to speak its name... the ancient name... or would you simply warn the new arrival to beware... to beware the Dark Fall.
