Wii And Nintendo DS Controls Earn Nintendo A Second Emmy Award

For the second year in a row, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has honored Nintendo with an Emmy Award for excellence in engineering creativity. The groundbreaking Wii system was recognized for its innovative motion-sensing controls, which have attracted a broad range of nontraditional gamers and veteran players alike. The award also recognized Nintendo DS for its pioneering touch-screen control scheme and distinctive dual-screen display, both of which helped to make it the nation's top-selling game system of 2007.

Presented in Las Vegas at the annual Technological & Engineering Emmy Awards on Jan. 7, these latest honors set the stage for even more exciting control innovations from Nintendo in 2008. A forthcoming Mario Kart racing game for Wii will be packaged with a wireless Wii Wheel, while the hotly anticipated Wii Fit will keep players more active than ever with the extraordinary Wii Balance Board.

"The pioneering interfaces for Wii and Nintendo DS reflect our long tradition of seeking new ways to enhance the gaming experience for users at every level," said Don James, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of operations. "We're grateful for this award and thank the academy for honoring us a second time."

Nintendo previously received an Emmy in 2007 for its invention of the plus-shaped D-pad, which radically changed how people interact with their video games and, by extension, their televisions. For more information about Nintendo, please visit www.Nintendo.com.

Turn Sony PSP (PlayStationPortable) into a Personal GPS Navigation System with Go!Explore

Use Go!Explore in your car or on foot – it’s up to you

In early Spring 2008, PSP (PlayStationPortable) owners need never get lost again – thanks to a new addition to the Go! range called Go!Explore which puts 3D city mapping in users’ hands by turning PSP into a state-of-the-art Personal GPS Navigation System system. Just enter your destination and Go!Explore will do the rest for you.

The Go!Explore setup consists of an attachable GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver and a UMD disc of the user’s chosen maps. At the touch of a button, users will be able to find their position on a map and work out the direction they need to take. Go!Explore works both on foot and in the car and – as most of the hardware is in the PSP attachment – it offers a top-notch Personal GPS Navigation System system at a fraction of the cost of other systems on the market.

On foot, you’ll be able to plot your way through cities in 3D thanks to the fully modelled city maps contained on the UMD discs. Simply load the UDM disc, select your destination, and watch as the city’s landmarks and points of interest appear on-screen in 3D. You can download new maps and upgrades from PLAYSTATION Network (PSN) – a resource that guarantees you’ll find those special locations – wherever you’re travelling.

When you’re in the car, you’ll benefit from different display modes for day and night, meaning that you’ll always get the clearest view of where you’re going. And don’t worry about your battery life or where to put your PSP while driving – we’ve got Car Adaptor and Car Mount accessories on the way too – bundled together in one package.

And don’t worry about the credentials of the product – as well as the awesome hardware of PSP, Go!Explore uses the technology of two other market leaders: map data industry leader TeleAtlas and navigation software legends NavNGo.

“Go!Explore is a stunning addition to the Go! range,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP Senior Brand Manager at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Who would have previously thought that PSP owners would be able to use PSP to navigate their way around an unfamiliar city? It’s an awesome product and another testament to the unrivalled potential of PSP.”

The three ways to buy Go!Explore for PSP:
GPS receiver and UMD (including maps of the relevant country): RRP €119
GPS receiver, UMD (including maps), Car Adaptor and Car Mount: RRP €149
PSP, GPS receiver, UMD (including maps), Car Adaptor and Car Mount: RRP €299

Vivendi Games Mobile, a division of Vivendi Games, today announced an agreement with Nokia to bring a diverse line-up of award-winning mobile games to hundreds of thousands of Nokia handsets via Download! and Nokia Catalogues. The agreement is a further step forward in Vivendi Games Mobile’s partnership with Nokia following the announcement earlier this year of an agreement to offer mobile games via Nokia’s N-Gage program.

It will now be easier than ever for customers to download titles from popular franchises including Crash, Leisure Suit Larry, and Spyro and enjoy a steady stream of new and exciting games and related content like wallpapers and ring tones.

“The challenge in the mobile games value chain is not only to make great games and attract customers, but also in the effective merchandising of games and the ease with which consumers can find, purchase, and download games,” said Paul Maglione, president of Vivendi Games Mobile. “Nokia has met this challenge by providing visibility and easy access to great content via Download!. The end result is a new and promising distribution channel that creates further ‘impulse buy’ opportunities for our titles and also allows customers to enjoy the best mobile games on demand.”

Vivendi Games Mobile’s branded Catalogues recently launched in local-language versions in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine and the U.S. Catalogues in 25 other countries will be available soon. Vivendi Games Mobile’s Catalogue offers 12 games, subdivided into four browseable categories (New Releases, Top Sellers, Action/Adventure and Casual/Puzzle). Featured titles include the recently released Brain Shock, and Delta Force; titles based on premium entertainment brands like The Bourne Ultimatum and Eragon; and award-winning games like The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night and the revolutionary first-person shooter Urban Attack™. Vivendi Games Mobile’s Catalogue will be constantly updated with fresh content and special promotions.

PlayStation 3 still not in Profit say Sony

Costs are falling, but Sony won't make solid commitment

Sony's Kaz Hirai has said that the company hopes the next fiscal year will see the PlayStation 3 console business achieve a profit.

Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Hirai said that profitability in the 2008 financial year was not a definite commitment, but something the company was striving for.

"We want to get to the positive side of the equation as quickly as possible," commented Hirai, reports Reuters.

"The next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing. We are going through the budgets right now.

"That (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for," he said.

Sony has just announced sales figures for the PlayStation 3 during the US holiday period reached 1.2 million, although the machine is still being out-sold by Sony's own PlayStation 2 and PSP consoles.

Production costs for the PlayStation 3 are falling noted Hirai, with the recently introduced 40GB model requiring less components than the higher end 60GB and 80GB models.

"Component costs are coming down, and the number of components... we are seeing a reduction.

"The 40 GB PlayStation 3 obviously has fewer components, and uses less power, which means that components required to dissipate heat, for example, can be smaller, so there is some cost reduction there," he added.
