Denki Wins BEST DEVELOPER In TIGA Awards

Scottish games studio Denki has picked up the Best Developer trophy at the 2008 TIGA Awards, held in central London last night.

Denki was nominated, alongside fellow UK developers Blitz Games and Sumo Digital, as the development company which has made the greatest contribution to independent game development in the UK last year.

TIGA – The Independent Game Developers Association - is an industry body for companies in the UK which create videogames. Each of the awards were voted for by member companies.

Denki is renowned within the games industry for its focus on original game design, high-quality conversions of top-tier brands and carefully managed project development. The company is best known for its work on interactive digital television gaming where, in the past seven years, it has released nearly seventy titles through companies including the UK's Sky Television and DIRECTV in North America. Denki's releases include both original games and many based on leading brands from the likes of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Sky Sports, LEGO, Namco, Eidos and DreamWorks.

“It's a great honour to be chosen as the best independent developer,” said Denki's Internal Development Manager, Gary Penn, “particularly considering the significant achievements of our fellow nominees”. “We’re proud of having retained our independent status through what have been some very tough times for indie developers over recent years. We're especially delighted that our colleagues and peers within the industry rate Denki so highly and would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”

Building on their experience within the Game Boy Advance and digital television markets, Denki has recently turned its attention towards the Casual and Indie games sector.

“The new opportunities afforded to independent game developers by digital distribution means that games are becoming a far more inclusive pastime,” said Gary. “You can now play games on your television, mobile phone, web browser and even your MP3 player as well as the traditional games consoles people are already familiar with. This change means that for the first time in a generation we have the opportunity to re-engage with people who would never consider themselves ‘gamers’. The next challenge for the games industry is to start creating entertainment which will appeal to people who never normally play any sort of videogames. Denki is ideally positioned to deliver these new types of game and we already have several titles we’re very excited about in development.”

Denki is working on a number of forthcoming branded titles for interactive television as well as several yet-to-be announced games, based on original intellectual property for other platforms.

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea PC Updates

Latest news on PT Boats: Knights of the Sea development! Take to the high seas with us to find out more re what is new about Akella’s naval action sim.

Committed to keeping historical accuracy, game devs have introduced one more unit to the British navy – a legendary Fairmile D motor torpedo boat. It’s one of the largest and heavily armed boats in the world. It is fitted out with 4 torpedoes, 2 single 40-mm cannons, 2 twin 12,7-mm machine guns, 1 single 20-mm cannon, and depth charges.

The interfaces of the first-person view and tactical mode have been re-designed to better convey the battle experience on the open sea in the WWII. As you switch between modes, you reveal more new features. In the first-person view, you can see a fire control center available on board the boats and submarines. Targeting and selection of weapons are made through appropriate scopes (artillery, torpedo, and periscope).

The interface of the tactical mode has become easier and more good-looking; we’ve added keys/indicators that allow the gamer to repair separate vessel sections while staying at sea.

Please view illustrations of these new features in place in the game gallery. For more information about the game, please, visit the official website www.pt-boats.net.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMING SERIES ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN SCHEDULE FOR SECOND SEASON

Fresh from the unprecedented success of its inaugural 2007 season, Championship Gaming Series® (CGS), the only worldwide professional video gaming league, today officially announced its schedule of events for the 2008 North American season.

The commencement of the second season builds on the immense foundation laid last year, when CGS drafted 18 teams located on five continents, established an unprecedented player compensation, made high-definition broadcasts available to more than 350 million viewers worldwide, and crowned the Chicago Chimera team as the first-ever CGS World Champions at the $1 million World Final in Los Angeles. CGS has redefined professional gaming and transformed it into a modern sport for the digital age.

In North America, the 2008 season will get underway March 7-9 at the South by Southwest ScreenBurn Arcade in Austin, Texas. The CGS North American Combine and Draft will feature the best gamers from the United States and Canada vying to distinguish themselves for a spot on one of six teams: Los Angeles Complexity, New York 3D, Chicago Chimera, Carolina Core, San Francisco Optx, and Dallas Venom.

The CGS North American Combine is modeled after the same dynamic competition structure used by other professional sports leagues. Gamers compete in tournaments and special challenge matches issued by GMs. Players will also be subjected to the proprietary CGS H2i hand-eye coordination testing system which measures their raw gaming ability. North American GMs will then draft players to join their teams as pro athletes who will receive professional player contracts for the 2008 season.

“Last year, CGS revolutionized competitive gaming by launching the only worldwide professional gaming league and creating groundbreaking television programming distributed to a worldwide audience,” said CGS Commissioner Andy Reif. “This year CGS will continue to build on this momentum with plans to further expand our television distribution and also amplify our online initiatives to give our fans even greater access to the league.”

Following the North American Combine and Draft in Austin, the six teams will commence their competition in April and continue until mid July. Live coverage of the 2008 North American regular season will kick off on DIRECTV’s The 101 on June 23 and continue until the North American Final on July 14, 2008 where the top team will claim the title of North American Champion and take home the coveted Dew Trophy.

“When we announced the launch of CGS two years ago DIRECTV made a commitment to bring the phenomenon of competitive gaming viewership to a critical mass, and from the astounding results of the 2007 season, we believe we are on our way to achieving that goal,” said Steven Roberts, senior vice president, New Media and Business Development, DIRECTV, Inc.
“The television audience from the World Final has truly exceeded our expectations and proves that CGS is popular programming that attracts more than just core gamers, especially in the key male demographic of 18-34 yrs. We are proud to be a part of history in the making and we can’t wait to see what the 2008 CGS season brings us.”

In the coming weeks, details will be announced regarding CGS’ international schedule, the World Final, official Draft rules for each region and the official slate of the league’s 2008 Games.
CGS events are broadcast to more than 350 million viewers by DIRECTV’s The 101 in the U.S., BSkyB’s Sky One, Sky Two and Sky HD in the UK, ESPN STAR Sports in Asia, Sky in Brazil and Mexico, and DIRECTV throughout the remainder of Latin America, and across Continental Europe via broadcast partners which will be announced shortly.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND CREATED BY ACADEMY OF INTERACTIVE ARTS & SCIENCES SUPPORTS HIGHER EDUCATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF GAMING GURUS

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) has announced the creation of the Dr. Randy Pausch Scholarship Fund, established to support students pursuing careers in game design, development and production. The AIAS will award four $2,500 scholarships to students attending accredited universities.

This new scholarship fund, which will cultivate the gaming industry's brightest young minds, is a collaborative effort between the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and Bing Gordon, chief creative officer of Electronic Arts. The AIAS will donate $1 for every Academy member's vote for the 2008 Interactive Achievement Awards.

The AIAS has more than 12,000 members who are dedicated to serving the entertainment software industry. The 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, hosted by actor, comedian and avid video game player, Jay Mohr, will take place during the 2008 D.I.C.E. Summit on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas.

The scholarship fund honors Dr. Randy Pausch, professor of computer science, human-computer interaction and design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Dr. Pausch, a co-founder of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), has had great influence within the industry through his teachings, sabbaticals at Walt Disney Imagineering and Electronic Arts, and consultation with Google on user interface design.

"It makes sense that the Academy's first scholarship fund honor Dr. Randy Pausch, who has been an inspiration to those who want to be involved in making great games," said Joseph Olin, president, AIAS. "We hope these scholarships may help the next Will Wright or Mike Morhaime get their start. This new effort is a wonderful opportunity for the video game industry to support its future by providing a foundation in academics."

A scholarship committee comprised of AIAS board members Rich Hilleman, Electronic Arts; Don Daglow, Stormfront Studios and Mike Capps, Epic Games, along with the University of Southern California's Chris Swain and Carnegie Mellon's (former AIAS board member) Jesse Schell to select scholarship recipients. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences will begin accepting applications after the 2008 D.I.C.E. Summit. HandyGames honoured with more than 100 awards!

HandyGames is proud of having broken the mark of 100 international awards for their mobile games „Made in Germany“, in January 2008.

In addition to the successful Townsmen-series, big licenses like Gothic 3 – The Beginning or Panzer Tactics and especially complex in-house titles like Sturmtrupp Mars or Anarchy 2087 were able to win the specialised press’ hearts.

The promising line-up for the first half of 2008 already contains a huge potential with exceptional casual games like Dynamite Fishing, new extreme sports titles like Park or Die or action-strategy-blockbusters like The Egyptians.

"This year’s major goal is to bring our top titles area-wide to the US and Asia. Talks have already started and will be intensified at the GDC in San Francisco.“, says Markus Kassulke, CEO of HandyGames™. „The partner who will release only a couple of our top titles in the USA, can count on an enormous increase in sales and thus gain important market shares in this highly competitive market - with only little effort and risk!“

"Our mix of strong licenses and unique in-house productions is going to cause a stir in the industry in 2008 and will lead to increasing market shares in Europe, too.“, says Udo Bausewein, CFO of HandyGames™. „We will continue to focus on very high quality and an in-house production.” From game-design, graphics, programming, sound to porting and QA – everything is done by the company’s own staff in Germany.“

In this course, the HandyGames™ team would like to thank all the renowned European magazines like Airgamer, Areamobile, Doupe, Gaminator, GamingXP, HandyPlayer, Jeuxpo, Jeuxvideo, Looki, Mobilegamefaqs, MobilHry, Mogaming, Movilgamers, Play2Go, Pocketgamer, Projectnext, Wgworld (alphabetical order) and many others for the long and successful cooperation!

This Just In... Namco Networks Launches Atlantis Sky Patrol

Namco Networks, the leading publisher and developer of mobile games and entertainment for mass-market casual gamers, today announced the availability of the hit PC game Atlantis Sky Patrol on mobile, the company’s first title through its partnership with Big Fish Games. Atlantis Sky Patrol is a unique marble-matching puzzler with hundreds of levels, mini-games and innovative game play mechanics.

In the game, players lead Atlantis Sky Patrol in the fight to destroy Doomsday Devices that have been detected in the skies above Earth. With a double-tiered game mechanic, there are two game objectives to clear each level. The first is to dismantle the machine’s stationary control mechanism. The second is to clear the chain of marbles within each level by shooting matching colored marbles.

“With the popularity of mobile puzzlers among consumers across the U.S., we wanted to bring a quality game that introduced new features to this genre, taking the game play to an entirely new level,” said Scott Rubin, vice president of sales and marketing, Namco Networks. “The hit PC title Atlantis Sky Patrol was the perfect puzzle game to port to mobile and supports Namco Network’s commitment to providing fun, quality games that are suitable for the mobile platform to mass-market consumers.”

“Atlantis Sky Patrol is a fantastic game with a strong following. Namco successfully translated the quick and intuitive play onto the mobile platform,” said Patrick Wylie, vice president of Big Fish Games Studios. “We are committed to delivering the best game experiences to our customers and our partnership with Namco for the mobile version of Atlantis Sky Patrol continues that tradition of excellence.”

In the game, players can set off chain reaction combos to score big points and obtain one of the 12 power-ups in the game, such as releasing the Rainbow Hammer, harnessing the Soul of Atlantis, and unleashing the Oriphculum Bomb to assist in the destruction of the Doomsday Devices. By collecting coins, players can upgrade the ship, enhancing its firing speed and improving shooting accuracy. Mini-games found throughout the game offer additional opportunities for players to obtain coins.

“Atlantis Sky Patrol is a flashy little puzzler. I'm really fond of the theme, because not only does it hit my sweet spot (I love those old serials and the entire art deco look), but it also adds to the overall experience,” said Levi Buchanan of IGN Wireless.

Atlantis Sky Patrol is available today on all national carriers. Visit www.NamcoGames.com/AtlantisSkyPatrol for more information.

Dead Head Fred Receives Nomination For WGA's First-Ever Videogame Writing Award

Dead Head Fred, the critically acclaimed videogame created specifically for the PSP (PlayStation®Portable) by publisher D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA), and developer Vicious Cycle Software, Inc., has received a nomination for the Writers Guild of America's inaugural Videogame Writing Award. In Dead Head Fred, writers and nominees Dave Ellis and Adam Cogan draw players into an original 1940's-inspired alternative universe where players take on the role of Fred Neuman, a private detective savagely murdered and then resurrected in a bizarre scientific experiment without his memory or his head. Players embark on a quest for vengeance as they solve their own murder by using the severed heads of enemies as replacements for the one missing on the game's cranium-impaired hero.

"D3PA congratulates Dave, Adam and the team at Vicious Cycle who brought Dead Head Fred to life, to use an ironic turn of phrase," said Peter Andrew, vice president of product development, D3PA. "It was the game's unique story and resulting gameplay mechanic, distinctive characters and twisted and sarcastic humor that first convinced us that we wanted to bring this title to gamers, and we appreciate the WGA for recognizing it with a nomination for their very first Videogame Writing Awards."

Developed by the WGA and spearheaded by the Guild's New Media Caucus to encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, improve the status of writers, and foster uniform standards within the gaming industry, the WGA's inaugural Videogame Writing Award spotlights quality work by videogame writers, raising their profiles, and validating their contributions to this rapidly maturing medium. The WGA Videogame Writing Award honors the best qualifying script from a videogame published in the previous year. 2008 Writers Guild Awards winners in all categories will be announced on Saturday, February 9.

"Dead Head Fred was a lot of fun for the entire team to work on, and much of that was because of Dave's and Adam's creative script," said Eric Peterson, president and chief executive officer, Vicious Cycle Software. “We want to thank the WGA for the nomination-we're very proud of it. The entire team is dedicated to continue the tradition of developing games that combine great gameplay with storytelling and humor that is on par with the best television and movies out there.”

Dead Head Fred is rated "M" (Mature - Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor and Strong Language) by the ESRB.

Another blow to Toshiba HD DVD Sony Blu-Ray 2 - Toshiba HD DVD 1

Toshiba Corporation announced its latest financial results yesterday with the headline news that its operating profit fell in the third quarter by 25 per cent to JPY 43.1 billion (USD 404 million, EUR 274 million) in the three months ending December 31, 2007.

That was down to the Digital Products and Electronic Devices divisions, specifically mobile phones, hard disk drives and a "larger than anticipated sales decline in NAND flash memories".

Meanwhile the figures for the nine months ending December 31 show a consolidated operating income increase of JPY 3.5 billion (USD 32.8 million, EUR 22.2 million) to JPY 124.6 billion (USD 1.2 billion, EUR 791 million).

The results, when added to the recent raft of companies that have stated their preference to support Sony's Blu-ray rather than Toshiba's HD DVD, don't make for a happy start to 2008 for the corporation.

But despite that its share price rose slightly by 2.4 per cent to JPY 726 (USD 6.81, EUR 4.61) at the close of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

No 120GB PlayStation 3 in UK say Sony

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has told GamesIndustry.biz that there are currently no plans to introduce a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the region.

Rumours are circulating that Sony America is due to launch a new model PlayStation 3 in the US, as stocks of the 80GB model begin to disappear from shelves.

Gaming blog Ars Technica has reported that a 120GB sku is due shortly – complete with DualShock 3 controller and retailing for the same price as the 80GB Spider-Man 3 bundle – although Sony has made no comment to confirm this.

However, if any 120GB unit is to be launched in North America, there's no such roll-out on the cards for Europe.

"We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK," said a spokesperson for SCEE.

Sony has hinted in the past that it could release PS3 units with larger hard-drives if consumers demanded it, to take advantage of the increasing supply of digitally delivered content via services such as the PlayStation Network.

Sony has constantly chopped and changed prices and hardware configurations in all three of its key territories, most recently discontinuing the 20GB and 60GB skus in Japan.

Sword of the Stars: Collector’s Edition includes: the original base game, the highly acclaimed add-on Born of Blood (never released to retail in Canada or the US), the first ever Sword of the Stars novella The Deacon's Tale by renowned science fiction writer Arrin Dembo and a bonus CD with concept art, screenshots, trailers, cd tracks and other media. Sword of the Stars: Collector’s Edition will begin shipping to retailers across the US, Canada and English speaking European territories on March 25, 2008 on PC CD-ROM.

Erik Schreuder, Lighthouse Interactive CEO said, “Sword of the Stars is a great franchise and well deserving of a Collector’s Edition. Kerberos Productions has proven themselves to be an extremely talented team, which consists of team members behind the successful Homeworld series. They have also stayed loyal to their community by adding loads of new features and additional gameplay to the fanchise over the past 18 months.” Schreuder went on to say, “Current and new fans of the franchise will enjoy discovering the Sword of the Stars universe in much greater depth.”

GAME SUMMARY

The year is 2405. Human scientists have discovered a new technology, the Node Drive, which will finally allow travel from star to star at speeds faster than light. As mankind sits poised on the brink of a new era, tragedy strikes: the first interstellar colony ship is destroyed and Earth itself ravaged by an unknown alien race. What was to be the Dawn of a new Age instead was the beginning of a new reality…We are not alone…and we are not safe.

Take control and build the ultimate empire in Sword of the Stars. In classic 4X style, prepare to eXplore mysterious star systems, claim planets to eXpand your empire, eXploit your resources, then design and build your own bigger, faster, stronger ships to eXterminate your enemies in epic, tactical, 3-D battles, in single- or multiplayer.

Four races once set out to explore and conquer the galaxy, meeting in fiery clashes that spanned the universe, but now a promising age of diplomacy dawns.
